Stokes injured in pub game now on crutches And the only reason he played was greed. Loads of other test players in it was well, if we had had a championship game this week none of them would have played even though it would have been better preparation for a test series

I know people like to blame The Hundred for everything that goes wrong, but Stokes could have pulled up in training or a One Day Cup game. Or the iron could have fallen off the ironing board and landed on his foot, and still The Hundred would be blamed.
I agree about the greed, but it applies to Jennings as well. He’s our captain and he knows how under strength we are in the ODC, so could he not have turned London Spirit down and helped us try and win a few more games? Of course not, he wanted The Hundred money.

Of course not, he wanted The Hundred money. Traditional fans allegiance is to their county, is it the same with players? Players must see the hundred as a chance for world wide exposure and a bit of extra cash. For them it's an opportunity for the England coaching staff watching how they get on under pressure and also possible franchise contracts in other countries. How many teams in the other comps around the world will now have Matty Hurst on their radar? I think it's slightly harsh to deny Jennings the chance when almost everyone else has put pen to paper.
I presume that when the players sign up for the hundred they are then available whether picked up in the first draft, as a wildcard or as a injury replacement. Lancs have felt it more because of the late call ups for Hurst, Aspinwall and Jennings plus Green missing the first game against Durham where he could have had an influence.
Last March just before the draft I wrote down the Lancashire players who had registered. For those that don't know (or care) it's pretty startling. As well as the usual suspects (Livi, Salt, Wood etc) also Jennings, Aspinwall, Bailey, Balderson, Bell, Blatherwick (don't laugh), Bohannon, Croft, Hurst Lavelle, Morley registered. There's not many left who didn't sign up. Next year you can probably add all the youngsters who played in this seasons Metro Bank.

I think Stokes possibly may be told by the ECB that he has to play to enhance their “ asset value”

To be fair (and more than a little bit cheeky) it is also probably in Lancashire’s best interest, given the impending knock-out stages of the Blast which we actually have a chance of winning unlike the Metro Bank, for Jennings to go and get some coaching from Trevor Bayliss in The Hundred for a couple of weeks than stay working with Benkenstein… And possibly quite good for Keaton’s sanity also. Less cheekily he has actually looked in good nick in The Hundred averaging 34 at a strike rate of 151 so would not be surprised if he is drafted next year for the whole competition.

I certainly wont criticise Jennings for playing in the hundred. The One Day Cup is always going to lack integrity and be sub standard when it runs parallel with the hundred and around 100 of the best county white ball cricketers are absent from the competition.
It's interesting that even Jimmy is talking about playing franchise cricket now. The ambitions for a young cricketer used to be to county cricket and then playing for England. I wonder now whether some you pros now see franchise cricket at the next step after county cricket.

Highly recommend a listen to the Test match special Crazy cricketing schedulesAll about the various franchises and the future of cricket. Interesting theory discussed as to whether it is better to sign a big name cricketer to a franchise eg Chris Gayle rather than someone who may win you the competition.. Presumably ecb to be renamed Indian Cricket Board...

Saqib was excellent in the Hundred final, let's hope he can bring some of that form to the Red Rose, (if selected of course).

Unfortunately from a Lancs point of view there is every chance he has played himself into the England T20/50 over squads for the Australia games. If selected he could miss the final 3 CC games plus a potential VB Finals day if Lancs reach it.

Given the relatively short gap between the end of the Sri Lanka test series and the beginning of the test tour to Pakistan I think any pace bowler involved heavily in the test team against SL would not participate in the white ball series against the Aussies. England seam bowlers on central contracts or development contracts are Wood, Archer, Atkinson, Carse, Curran, Potts, Tongue, Woakes, Anderson, Robinson, Stokes, Topley, Fisher, Mahmood and Turner. Remove players likely to feature heavily against SL (Wood, Woakes, Atkinson), injured (Tongue, Stokes), out of favour (Robinson), retired (Anderson) and only recently back from a ban by then (Carse) and that leaves Archer, Curran, Potts, Topley, Fisher, Mahmood and Turner. Although Potts is in the test squad I imagine he would get one test at most unless injury hits one of the others. Due to injury Fisher hasn’t played any white-ball cricket this summer, Curran would be seen as an all-rounder so a pace bowler battery of the remaining five (Archer and Topley as the more experienced leaders with Turner, Mahmood and Potts as the up and comers) would always have made sense as the basis of the squad. Maybe add Jamie Overton if he is cleared to bowl by then (although he would be more of an all-rounder). Craig Overton had a good tournament in The Hundred but has never been a major part of the England white-ball setup previously so not sure he would be looked at now. Olly Stone would be knocking on the door too and could be in that squad although with him being in the SL test squad and probably likely to be taken on the Pakistan tour given the desire of England to get real pace in the test team ahead of Australia and also a bit older/injury prone I can see him not also being included in the white ball squad. For what it is worth in this article it says Saqib expects to be in the Championship team this week and to participate in the Blast with the hope that he gets into the England white ball squad also. www.espncricinfo.com/story/men-s-hundred-final-saqib-mahmood-turns-his-eyes-to-the-light-after-two-years-of-injury-hell-1447900

Based on current form I’d rather Mahmood bowling a few short sharp bursts than Bailey and Blatherwick bowling long and ultimately ineffective spells.
