Second team performances in Club Cricket

Birkenhead Park were well deserved winners of the 2020. I probably would not go to a finals day again, however. No music played fortunately, just some drunken singing. A significant percentage of the few wickets were full tosses and I just hate bowlers only trying to dismiss batsmen by slogging . It did nothing to lift my doom that real cricket is ultimately finished although in Liverpool area there is significant support for non limited over.

On a day of such searing heat , it was unfair to ask amateur players to go straight into a final after the second semi final. Big advantage to have played in the morning when the BP players said there was plenty of dew about, giving bowlers a chance.

Although 2020 and cricket are as different as rugby league and rugby union , it is still a surprise BP have struggled in the league. The Rainford players were pleased that if it couldn’t be them, it was BP as was I .

Whilst Northern were  a player down, Rainford were two down and the squad looks threadbare at the end of today after Liam Gaskell pulled a calf muscle when batting leaving one seamer  and two rather than regular three seamers . Digman semi final home to Wigan tomorrow ; retaining trophy now looks odds against . 

Neverthless , Rainford put up a big fight and game could have changed completely on a couple of moments. 

Another duck for George Lavelle in this wretched season for him. 

Newton - Le Willows had Jack Morley back but it wasn’t enough .

Matt Critchley played for Wigan ; hope he doesn’t tomorrow.

Birkenhead Park beat Rainford

The last two seasons , Rainford haven’t lost a game from and including the August Bank Holiday but we won’t win another game this season if we play like this . Although the batting wasn’t great , we fancied ourselves to win if we got 160 ; it was spinning and we’ve been really good bowling this season and they’ve not scored many runs . I thought we would win with slightly fewer. However , we were dreadful. It made you wonder why BP have struggled this season , however as they bowled and batted well .

New Brighton v Wallasey is on Monday . The expected victory for Wallasey will make them fourth and Rainford fifth.

Ormskirk will be even bigger favourites in next Sunday’s final at holders Rainford than Northern were last year.

Glad at least we don’t play Formby twice in successive days.

A much needed win for Rainford MickeyG which I hope will give some confidence coming into tomorrow’s final. Unfortunately Lavelle got 60 odd today to play himself into form for tomorrow . The game wasn’t actually a great advert for top half Prem cricket with both teams poor in the field but result was everything.

Des, I think there were two former county cricketers playing for Formby Ian Cockbain who played for Gloucestershire and George Burrows who played briefly for us in COVID. Are either of them playing as a professional?
