palaceshield.play-cricket.com/website/results/4584760Staggering on to the end of the season the good news is we now have less than 100 overs to bowl this season, firstly a double header against Wrea Green, a less than impressed captain gets a message to say the 10 we had was now down to nine, worse still only two front line bowlers which meant having to fiddle the other 18 overs from the other six outfielders. Explain the fact to the opposition captain he wins toss and bats. So myself a Dave Lever spend the next 90 minutes twirling away with varying success, when I had done my 12 overs 2-55 the Green were 96-5 so we had done pretty well however think they had slightly changed the batting order around hence 13 year old Evan Malone was in early on. From then on in skipper Mayers and Ewan's dad Iain took the game away from us putting on 124 for the 6th wicket, Andy Bamford bowled decently, Chris Gregson hadn't bowled for 212 months managed 6 overs until his body gave up and Matt Westhead bowled his first overs for the club, the joys of the second team stand i skipper. Malone senior ended up with 96, fair play to our visitors they lent us fielders so we actually had 11 on the field So chasing 248 chances of winning zero 5-2 with a tail starting at six soon 19-4 with the captain run out for the third time again for 0 not my fault, Mr Bamford obviously forget I'm not Usain Bolt. A bit of lusty hitting from Andy Bamf and Dave Lever got us to a better total before Andy Bamf running for hamstring casualty Andrew Bodsen managed to run him out as well We paly them again this week on teh ground with the duck pond looking forward to it

palaceshield.play-cricket.com/website/results/4584751Almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on to have the jaws of defeat snatch it back. The ground with the duckpond on it almost saw an epic finish as we failed by 10 runs to achieve the rare feat this season of winning a game. As with last week Wrea Green won the toss swapped the batting order around, to be fair we did the same with ur bowling order as I was put on for the third over of teh game, two wickets in my first two over we had them three down for not so many, enter Jamie Todd smote my third over for 14 and that was my spell over for teh afternoon. He doesn't defend he swings from the hip and the ball is propelled at a series speed hence the massive bruise on my foot having had teh misfortune to get in teh way of a drive heading back to me at warp factor 10 Decent partnership with Iain Malone who had got 90 plus against us last week and after about 10 overs they were scoring at 7 an over. Good slip catch by Lever to get rid of Malone before Ackers with hisleggers got Todd for a violent 50. We worked our way through the rest of the batting with possibly a couple of favourable decisions. But Malone junior and Langley took the score to 109. On 98-9 Malone scooped the ball in the air between three close fielders not one of them reacted, little did we realise that that was a pivotal moment especially as we were 14-6. The McCleod brothers lasted five balls made none between them only Beveridge with seven suggested permanence although Mr Horsfall lasted nearly 50 balls for little as he likes to do. First baller for me, inswinger didn't really pick it up did not bounce hit stumps, balls that do not bounce are liable to get me out this season, third time. Skipper Duffield and Lever rallied the skipper doing the bulk of the scoring, slowly we began creeping towards their score mainly from the bat of Duffers although Lever did contribute 10. Hughes came in retired hurt and Ackers didn't last long, in went Hughes again with a runner and we edged closer. Hughes departed and it was left to the skipper and Neil the wicket keeper. Duffers scored the majority of the expectations grew on the sidelines until it was cruelly dashed when Wlletts was bowled. The skipper ended up with 59 not out to go with his three wickets otehr mentions to Ackers who got five wickets which more than made upform his hammering at Ingol. Wrea Green's last match they spent 50 quid on booze and we toasted the end of their season, we have one more to go Blackpool 4ths next Saturday

After a chaotic last two weeks the season duly got of to a truly uninspiration defeat. Let me set the scene the chairman of the club who was also the second team up sticks and has gone to play for Blackpool. The reason for his defection he was not happy about a possible merger between ourselves and the other club in Poulton, Fylde CC The aid is to keep their young players in the game as they do not have enough teams to keep them happy and they could end up leaving the club and being lost to the game. His intention was develop our own talent and as such develop the club. Ours is a council ground which has a Pavillion which is a bit tired saying the least. The only youth players we have are the first team skipper's sons. We have also lost including with the second team skipper numbered six, including the two top scorers in the first team, plus the clubs all time leading run scorer. We have had three new players one who has never played cricket before, so basically the merger is a no brainer. On Thursday when I saw the 8 men who had been selected, thought we would have difficulty actually scoring double figures, yep it was that bad. We ended up with 10 in the end. However you need 4 bowlers we had three, so the script was win the toss and bat which I duly and as expected we were 4-5 luckily a bit of lusty tail end hitting got us to 29, which was better than the first match last season when we were all out for 26 and lost by 10 wickets. The first over of their innings went for 15, the first ball of the next over went for 6 so looking at losing within 2 overs however anoter exocet was heading towards Mars when the subsitute they had lent us took a one handed catch which has already won catch of the season. We managed to take another wicket before they won Might be a long season but the aim is just to get a second team out every week

palaceshield.play-cricket.com/website/results/5102148After last weeks lack of a team although technically we could have put one out but the team we would have put out would have been weaker than the poor one we put out on the first game, by the look of it I would have had to bowl all 40 overs and open the batting. So docked three points fro that, today we had 11 including the Taylor brothers so we had a better than normal side. Usually pre match hassle, anybody got the keys to the pavillion, neither side had a scorer and only we had an umpire. The joys of Division 6 cricket. Won the toss again theerby enhancing my credibility as the best tosser in the team. put the opposition in. We bowled them outr for 95 Scott Taylor took 7 wickets not bad for someone who hadn't played this season, his brother Steve got one and a very poorly James Rawcliffe got the other, they only had ten men. The two lads who got virtually all the runs were to say scabby both could have been out numerous times and scored virtually all their runs with leg side shots bit like me but more successful. Missed catches let some easy runs through mistakes could quite have easily had them out for about 50 but we had a chance. We lost wickets on a regular basis only Steve Taylor early on with 18 looked permanent, we were 39-3 and looked in with a chance however they had luck with the bat and luck with the ball two wickets were lost to balls which in my case pitch and never got above worm height. Made a brave effort towards the end just failed but this was a game we so could have easily won. Next up the league leaders on that joy of all joys an artifical wicket

Watched a bit of Keswick v Furness yesterday . Couldn’t stay for Furness innings as had a 70th birthday meal to go to. Lovely place to watch. Keswick is a lovely place to watch cricket, I wasn’t there yesterday, but watched them lose to Cockermouth in the cup this afternoon.
Apparently they were short of about 6 players against Furness due to a wedding, that’s club cricket for you!
Not exactly village .... about six County players on show and both clubs had pros playing.

Hi Chris. Yes, as you say far from village cricket . Are you at Keswick often?
As I alluded to on another post, my knowledge of both second team and “ Minor Counties” is not what it was six/seven years ago . I will probably always call it “ Minor” counties as I’m just struggling to learn anything new, especially the names of new players. The lack of the Cricket Paper doesn’t help.

Keswick is only half an hour away, but I don’t watch a lot of club cricket. I went to Cockermouth yesterday, as I needed to speak to a couple of people. Tend to pick my matches. There is enough cricket that Cumbria play these days across the three formats to keep my happy, we are about to start the 50 over competition, home games at Cockermouth and Keswick, at the begining and end of June. Then have to face the long trip to Barrow for 3 day championship action. Nobody likes driving down the coast road. I have only watched Lancashire teams a very few times over the last five years. Even Blackpool feels a long drive away!

palaceshield.play-cricket.com/website/results/5102112Won the toss again and put them in three out of three just a magician with the coin, the track looked a bit green so hoped our bowlers would do the trick After 5 overs they were 50-0 as the ball disappeared to all parts, we dropped one catch it went miles into the air Rob Abbott got his hands to hit dropped it. Bowling change the leg spin og Glen Ackerman started to work his way through the batting. At 104-6 we were well in the game but some lusty hitting on serial sledger Kerrigan got them towards their eventual total of 155 which is strange as the scoreboard read 157, we fielded well on a dire school outfield, we only dropped one more catch Rob again, but new boy David Hankey took two. Quite impressive from us At 29-3 we were up against it but a lengthy stand between Messers Clayton and Carter put on 86, in Clayton's innings he hit a six, several fours and scored twice putting the ball between the posts of the football field which wwe were basically playing on. Clayton eventually fell to a good diving catch and then it was a bit of a procession although myself and Mr Lever put on 24, we fell just short. Went to school in Leyland where we were playing, so looked up my old school on Google Maps, disappointed to see that the cricket square was now buried under an artificial football pitch, looks like they no longer play the game
