Harmer is averaging 27+ with the bat in this year's RLC, which is better than Josh Bohannon.

The game has changed since T20 came along and I would say for the better. More aggressive batting and a belief in what can be done make this sort of thing more common, the T20 quarter final against Essex and the 2016 T20 final being examples which spring to mind.”Fair point Alan and by Exile. I still tend to think in old money. I don’t agree that the game has changed for the better however. Yes the fielding always improves year by year but batting wise, the game has only changed in a gimmicky way; nothing of real substance . I’m not interested in going to watch scoop shots, reverse sweeps et cetera. I appreciate that they are skills but I love cricket for the beauty of the game and I don’t think they have enhanced that. Not sure that the 24 in 1971 is a fair comparison, Exile as it wasn’t a last over even though David Hughes felt that he had to get most of the runs in that over because it was the last one they were really going to be able to see anything!

Mmm...I just thought you were a bit hard on Croft, Des. He had had a terrific match until the last over. Tbh I think, however disappointing, a tie with Essex was a moral victory for Lancs, who were much the weaker side. Where we really messed up was against Middlesex but, whatever Chilton says, I don't think we were ever seriously in the running to win this competition.

I agree we were never strong enough to win this and maybe expectations were raised by beating 3 of the weaker sides early on but it would have been nice to have had another game in the comp.
It would have broken up some of this ridiculous gap of no cricket in August at least.
Enjoyed seeing the younger players and think Morley Lavelle and Balderson came out with alot of credit. Its a shame we probably won't see them again until next year.
However to finish below a fairly poor Gloucester team doesn't look too good on Chiltons cv. There were periods in the two defeats where it got pretty ragged. I feel Chilton would be better utilised at age group level and an external full time batting coach brought in. That person along with Onions would mean Chapple had enough support and the role of assistant coach would be superfluous.
Very interesting Bailey got the captaincy ahead of Jennings. It often happens when the best bowler is also the captain they under bowl themselves. A few times he had overs left to bowl. He will have learnt alot from these games.
On to the long wait for the t20 quarter final...

I think this is right, R&R. However, finishing below Gloucs, whom we easily defeated, was partly down to bad luck (getting rained off against Kent) and partly down to the absurd decision by the ECB to reward the Gloucs team for getting COVID. If Gloucs couldn't field a team, the correct thing to do was to award the points to the opposition. Where we really messed up, though, was against Middlesex and I'm afraid that this was largely Tom Bailey's fault for relying too much on seam in the later stages of the Middlesex innings and underusing the spinners (12 overs left unbowled). As regards his own bowling, it seems obvious that Bailey, a seriously good new ball bowler but not much good with a soft ball, should aim to bowl all his ten overs by the 30th over at the latest. Tbf I thought his captaincy against Essex was a big improvement, even though he did wait too long to bring himself back on.
We should definitely have made the QFs but would have needed a lot of luck to get any further with such a weak (in OD terms) seam attack.
I completely agree with what you say about Chilton, who seems to have risen through the Lancs hierarchy "without trace" (as was once said of David Frost). He wasn't a great batsman, apparently unable to play with "soft hands" so regularly snicking off without scoring many and was completely out of his depth as captain. He has been a good boy though...
