What on earth is Chilton talking about saying that "the bowlers have to improve"? Our bowlers were good enough to bowl out Surrey at The Oval but couldn't even bowl out Northants (whom they overwhelmed at Wantage Road) on our pudding of a pitch.

I believe debt is around £30m but Lancs can generate a lot of income from non-cricket activities. It's a pity that hotel extension wasn't completed for any for the internationals. Yeah. I think the financial situation is fair enough given we've got an entirely new ground out of it. Am no fan of the design of the new developnents, but they were absolutely necessary and have put us in a good position for the future. If it means playing the kids for a couple of years, then fine. As long as we don't end up playing Croft and other ageing stop gaps (no disrespect to them, but we should be focusing on the future in all selections). Looks like a lot of the older squad players (Lamb, Jones etc) are moving on, which is probably a good move for all parties. Would rather someone like Hurst got a chance.

Better pitches would help but you still need the bowlers to exploit it. At the moment we are a bit short of them...

It does seem like a fair enough approach to go with our younger players going forward given the money situation mentioned above due to the necessary ground improvements. And we have some good ones by the looks of things. Yep, they will need time, and they will be inconsistent. I think we as fans from what I read on here are very patient with young players in general and give good support.

Well that's true MITS: we all agree that management bungling has left us short of a genuine quickie and a really good spinner but Chilton seemed to be saying that the pitches are not a problem and that the reason we have won no matches at OT is that the bowlers aren't good enough, even though they have been good enough to win at other grounds. Does he think we drew the first game because the Surrey bowlers weren't good enough? The fact is that no-one has won any red ball matches at OT this year and, in any season, a red ball win at OT is a rare event.

It does insult the intelligence (and the bowlers) to suggest the pitches haven't played a part in our inability to win games at OT.
If I'm at home watching a stream I'll often choose a game from another county over a game at OT because of the dull, attritional cricket the wicket encourages.
Surrey have produced "gamey" pitches this season in recognition of their 5 man pace attack. They are great wickets, good batters can score on them but good bowlers are always in the game.
It is a shame we aren't run half as well as Surrey. If we had good leaders at Lancashire they would recognise that fact and try and learn from the best counties in the country.

Best pair in the country given the right tracks to bowl on By the end of our championship winning season we had six bowlers with strike rates of between 37 and 54. That based on a minimum of 180 overs bowled. So far this season, on a minimum of 180 overs bowled, we have just two...

That's true, of course, but it's not really comparing like with like. Also there's a difference between saying that we need more good bowlers (which we obviously do) and saying that the present bowlers have "got to improve", as if all they lack is discipline and motivation. Blaming the players is just a way of not taking responsibility.

If Lancs don't bowl again this season: Morley 108 overs 8 wickets average 42 Wells 73 overs 10 wickets average 26 (1 wicket since bigged up as a front line spinner) Hartley 286 overs 19 wickets average 44 (BB 2-10) Blatherwick 87 overs 8 wickets average 49 Balderson 235 overs 10 wickets average 34 Wood 60 overs 5 wickets average 41 2nd division really

Not great, to say the least, but signing an overseas batter is obviously the way to go...
