Good win yesterday but very strange decision by Notts to bat first. The Notts fans sitting near me were bewildered. Notts have lost their other two games in the One Day Cup at Wellbeck this year after electing to bowl first so that might have influenced them. I spoke briefly to Graham Onions in the afternoon when the Jennings/ Croft partnership was going well and he said that Lancs would have bowled if they had won the toss.

Only players who have played in the one day cup should represent England in 50 over competition. Either 50 over series or the World cup. That would certainly force the County v franchise issue. Why would the ECB exclude players from selection for England because they had played in an ECB competition?

The only two games we lost were the two we played at OT. Food for thought. Yes. I suppose Lancs will point out that these defeats were to the top two sides in the division but really they need to think about why Lancs teams find it easier to win away from OT. The strip for the two defeats displayed all the worst aspects of the pitch preparation philosophy at OT, especially the perverse pride in the pitch "lasting", quite regardless of whether or not it produces a good game. If the pitches played the same way for both sides, you could at least argue that a lot of spectators enjoy a slog fest and don't care if the bowlers are just cannon fodder but nearly always these pitches get lower and slower. In CC games this usually results in a fourth innings stalemate, with one side being unable to score and the other being unable to take wickets. In OD matches (apart from T20) the pitch heavily favours the side batting first. At some 40-over semi-final against Warwickshire back in the day, I found myself sitting next to Warren Hegg and he made exactly the same point. The recent Hants game reminded me of the Friends Provident Trophy semi-final in 2009. Chapple won the toss and foolishly chose to bowl. On the initially hard surface, Adams and Lumb tucked in and got to 159 but at that point the pitch began to slow down, the ball stopped coming onto the bat and the next highest score was 29. In the end Hants were all out for 271, which didn't look great after being 159 for 0 but when Lancs batted they couldn't get the ball off the square and were all out for 207. This year's game went exactly the same way: Middleton and Gubbins put on 131 but the next highest score was 26. Faced with a modest total, Lancs couldn't find any batting fluency and lost.
When the square was turned, a lot of people hoped it would mark the end of this sort of pitch but it hasn't.

Just seems messed up to me that some players, the only 50 overs they will play will be for England and so they never get any other practice.

Completely agree. I think the other counties left in the competition will agree as well. btw I see that Matt Parkinson is the third highest wicket taker in this year's competition. Yes, Parky is doing well, though Morley has a better economy rate. Is Morley better in the field and with the bat than Parky?

Fonseka top scored again for England U19's with 76 before being run out. Carney scored 46 before also being run out. You can understand why Rob Jones opted to leave with all this batting talent coming through. Not that long ago that we were bemoaning the fact that we couldn't produce any batsmen.

Will we give them a chance, sillypoint? Maybe times are changing at Lancs and some of the younger lads are to be given a proper chance, the likes of Balderson should be playing all the time now. Lets hope the rest can be given more chances, the Hartleys, Blatherwicks, Aspinwalls, Morleys, Lavelles, Bells, Hursts etc, etc. I know its a results business and some of these are mid 20's in age but Lancs need to take the chance.

Completely agree, Mickey. We have an excellent crop of up and coming young players and bringing in players from other counties should be a last resort but the two division championship heavily encourages short term thinking. Instead of following a carefully worked out development plan, counties are forever (as they see it) plugging gaps or, worse, trying to follow the football model. However, this probably isn't the right thread to discuss re-structuring the CC...

FWIW I would have no issue with Wells playing. He is a loyal servant to the club. His spin might be useful as well!

Well it is their only chance of silverware, so understandable they should want to get the best team possible out.
Not that Buttler or Livingstone would be interested in playing in so menial a competition!
