A superlative performance yesterday, head and shoulders above the other bowlers, no slight on them. Pace, carry, movement, great skills. Was it 10 overs he bowled at the start of their first innings with no real diminution in performance. It would be criminal if that was his last game of championship cricket, fingers crossed for September.

Agree with OldhamExile above. Nevertheless, I don’t agree with the bandwagon of comments saying England shouldn’t be finishing him. Test cricket is much tougher than a day and a half of County cricket and Jimmy’s performances last summer just suggest that last one or two per cent of spark won’t be there often enough to take Test wickets and you can’t have your lead bowler there to be just economical.
Jimmy took Matthew Hoggard’s place when the same happened to Hoggard.
Whilst there is no replacement for him at Test level , there won’t ever be even a partial one unless someone is given a chance.
I don’t agree with the concentration on Ashes Tests to the exclusion of all else but that is the modern reality and somebody has to be given the chance to be an attack leader . That is, if any of them can stay fit for long enough.

We never got to find out why Anderson was at Canterbury and didn't play.

From BBC website: Following his Test retirement, Anderson will immediately join the England coaching team as a mentor. He said he is unlikely to play for Lancashire again this year, but did not rule out playing on next season.www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/c10lmy1467zo

Do we think his Lancashire reluctance is down to money? Or is it down to dropping down a level compared to playing international cricket? He said recently that he's bowling better than ever. And he made it sound like he wasn't thinking about retiring. So if you want to keep playing and England have said its time to move on in international cricket then why the reluctance to play for Lancs? He looked like he was enjoying it at Southport. I guess I don't get it.

I guess I don't get it. My thoughts are money has nothing to do with it. For the best part of 20 years Jimmy has been in the England bubble, every Test match a big occasion. Virtually each time he has turned out for Lancashire has been working towards an England Test series. The question now is does Jimmy want to turn out in the middle of September or early April in front of a sparse crowd? God knows how many sacrifices he has made in order to maintain the high standards, I would think he thought it worthwhile when the goal was a Test match. His dedication is admirable considering fast bowling is the most punishing of all the disciplines in cricket. Last week at Southport was a masterclass, it showed that in the CC he is head and shoulders above most other bowlers but in the last 12 months he hasn't had the same impact at Test level, which I suspect Jimmy judges himself on. Does he want to put his body through further sacrifice at 42/43 years of age when he doesn't have the incentive of a Test match?

Something else to bear in mind is that Jimmy's central contract expires at the end of September. How much does a bowling mentor pay? Probably less I'd guess. Can't think his Lanc's contract will be much if only plays some red ball games next season? Maybe better for him if he prioritises his media career..

In the Telegraph he has stated he thinks tomorrow’s game is his last first class game this season

This may or may not be Jimmy's final game of first class cricket. Whatever he decides it has been an absolute privilege to see him in action for both Lancashire and England. A Rolls Royce, I struggle to think of another fast bowler with a smoother action. He will be missed.

Totally agree. At Southport he had a test match to look forward to and get ready for. I just can't see him putting himself through a pre-season to play in the cold of April & September in front of two men and a dog. Would you? I know I wouldn't. It's far better we remember them for who they were. Remember watching Alastair Cook at Blackpool last year getting out to two poor shots and looking pretty uninterested, and thinking how sad it was and that he should have retired. He only averaged 33 last season with one century in 26 innings.
There are Legends competitions which seem to be thriving. If he still likes playing he'd be better travelling the world, playing with his mates in warm weather, in front of admiring crowds

I hear you guys, and of course the current county championship schedule doesn't help Lancs cause to convince him to play because there are few games in the warmer months. If Jimmy could pick and choose his games maybe in the warmer months he would play a few, but yeah April and Sept are not cricket friendly. He can't be that bothered about carrying on now that England will be gone if its not a quick decision to want to play for Lancs.

When is the next Championship game, late August? Can he be bothered staying in training only for a few games which may well be rained off? I suspect he will find coaching and media work a more interesting option.

I can't see being a part time bowler working out for Lancs or Jimmy. Also won't it hold back the development of someone like Aspinwall.
