Good luck to Jack. Very sorry to see him leave I think he is our best red ball spinner. I think he could have a successful career at Derbyshire.

At the members forum held after the end of season. Mark Chilton made it clear that Tom Hartley was our first choice spinner. I was very surprised at the amount of faith the DOC showed in Hartley, he said something along the lines "Tom has not had a great season but he will come back and regain his previous form". Chilton made it sound as though Hartley was a proven wicket taker it was the sort of language you might have expected him to use about Tom Bailey who has a very good track record but had a bad season. The DOC also made it clear that there were no plans to recruit another spinner. At the time there were rumours about Jack Morley joining Derbyshire. Charlie Barnard was mentioned during the discussion about spinners but Morley wasn't so I think most people present took that to mean that the rumours were true.

With the majority of championship games being played in either April/May or September with a 10:30 start the role of the spinner is being diminished in the red ball game. Young spinners coming into the game will probably be pushed down the white ball route and the rewards of franchise cricket will exacerbate this. It will be interesting to follow Charlie Barnard's progress.
