Very poor start to the season notwithstanding the players missing at the IPL. Feels like something's probably wrong, either with the coaching, in the dressing room, or both. Might be the rain in Hertfordshire affecting my mood but feels like relegation is a realistic prospect.

Should have taken this down to a two / three wicket margin. Captaincy has been useless as the commentators ,who know a lot more about it than I do, have said more politely. No doubt Exile will back me up on that. I know Jennings is very popular on here and he’s doubtless a nice chap, but he is just in the tradition of useless Lancashire English captains of the last 33 years. What on earth was the point of bringing Wells on when the match was lost? Surely Williams or Balderson could have had a couple rather than just one for the change of ends ? As the commentators kept saying, it was the lack of grip on the singles that was the main problem. Surprised Lyon didn’t join the captaincy by committee and say it was nonsense having so many back. Mind you, when you think of some of the bizarre captaincy against Bazball last year, maybe Australians aren’t as good thinkers on the game as they used to be. I think most captains nowadays are too influenced by one day cricket fields. Bailey’s control was so poor that you would think he should miss out in favour of Sakib, but given the lack of confidence shown in Williams there, it could be him. Agree with all the above Des. No real feel of a game plan, what were they doing last night and this morning? Butch and Ath are two of the more thoughtful commentators and, as usual, it was difficult to disagree with either. We didn't have enough runs but it did feel like we could have made that more difficult for Kent. Heard on the radio earlier that Saqi took some persuasion to play red ball this season, was originally planning to go white ball but Benkenstein persuaded him to take a red ball contract. But apparently he will bowl fewer overs than you would normally expect from a seamer.

Thanks for that JohnW
Agree with him it was a good cricket pitch . Disagree about bad luck with umpiring decisions. None of them were out!

Vitality County Championship, Division One, Emirates Old Trafford (day four)
Lancashire 92 & 332: Bell 65, Hurst 58, Balderson 48; Agar 3-65, Parkinson 3-70
Kent 261 & 166-3: Bell-Drummond 79*, Compton 29; Lyon 2-48
Kent (20 pts) beat Lancashire (3 pts) by seven wickets
Kent eased their way to a seven-wicket victory on the fourth morning at Emirates Old Trafford to clinch their first Vitality County Championship win of the season. Skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond led his team to their 164-run target with a an excellent unbeaten 79 despite some good pressure applied by Lancashire bowlers on the fourth morning with Nathan Lyon taking the two wickets to fall.
The visitors resumed the day on 71 for one needing a further 93 runs to win, and a tense battle developed during the first hour as Lancashire applied good pressure from the twin spin attack of Lyon and Tom Hartley.
Both created chances with four fielders present around the bat, but Kent pair Ben Compton and Bell-Drummond countered with some solid defence and good running while riding their luck at times on a turning wicket.
Compton survived a dropped catch when on 27, top eding a sweep off Lyon to backward square leg where a diving Will Williams initially caught the ball only for it to be jarred out of his hands on landing.
But Lyon was not to be denied for long, diving to his right to take a good catch off his own bowling after Compton shuffled down the wicket and drove straight back to the bowler after making 29 with Kent 91 for one and still 73 runs away.
Bell-Drummond calmed any visitors nerves, reaching his fifty off 115 balls – he now has scored at least fifty in all four matches this season, converting two of them into hundreds – and followed by hitting just the second boundary of the day by lofting Hartley to long-on.
Jack Leaning dug in alongside Bell-Drummond to make 16 before edging to Luke Wells at slip after playing back to Lyon when 35 runs were required.
Joe Denly (19 not out) helped Bell-Drummond knock those runs off with few alarms to clinch the win just before lunch interval.
Kent gain 20 points from the match and Lancashire 3.
Lancashire are next in action when we travel to Trent Bridge to play Nottinghamshire in the Vitality County Championship starting on Friday.
“It’s always disappointing to be on the wrong side of a result,” said Head Coach Dale Benkenstein.
“A couple of things coming into the job, everyone mentioned it’s hard to get results here.
“We’ve tried a few things in the first two home games, managed to get a pitch to spin in the first one in quite rainy conditions, and I think this was one of the best pitches I’ve seen with the ball carrying, bringing the seamers into the game, and also some real life for the spinners.
“I thought we bowled well, although at 70 for four we maybe had a chance to bowl them out for under two hundred. We played two spinners hoping that batting on days two and three would be the best time to bat.
“I think their attack just had a little bit more behind the ball and they made it tough for us. “An innings where you are 50 for eight and get bowled out for 92, you are going to be struggling. That was disappointing. There was some good bowling from Kent and some pretty poor decisions from our batters.
“The nice thing is over the last two days we’ve played some very good cricket. That’s where we will focus on and try and take it into the next game.
“It was great to see your team go out there and still believe they can win defending 163. If we had got one or two wickets then it could have been a really interesting finish.”
“I thought we bowled far better than three wickets suggests. We had not one decision from the umpires. Quite a few appeals and I think they were under real pressure. But we never really had enough runs on the board.”
Benkenstein was enthused about the second innings contributions from the younger players in the side.
“It was fantastic to see two young guys (Bell and Hurst) get stuck in under pressure on a tough wicket," he said. "For me, it’s a great step forward.”
“We need our senior players to step up," he added.
"There’s room for them to be as good as they can be, we aren’t quite there yet with bat and ball. That’s exciting for me because if we can play as well as we can, and with our youngsters getting a bit of confidence, the team will get stronger and stronger as the season goes on.”

The batting has been so poor they already need to be thinking about trying to strengthen the middle order.
Sam Hain batting for Warwicks 2nds at the moment- something very strange there. If he has fallen out with them sign him on loan- high quality middle order player that they desperately need.

Do love it that our season depends on a returning 41 year old IIRC last season Jimmy gave an idea of which CC games he would play in; this season all quiet. Is he waiting for a decision on whether he will be selected for the test series? If not then retirement?
Re the Kent game you can see the effect of the Duke's ball and ideal bowling conditions - 1st innings average for the Lancs and Kent 1-5 batsmen 10.4..
Correct decision to insert but Kent's bowlers did better than Lanc's. If we had batted bit more sensibly in our 2nd innings might have cause more problems to Kent but I doubt it. Hartley getting a few past the bat but has yet to take a CC wicket this season. Lyon now bowled 128 overs (next highest Bailey with 85) but can we afford to rest him at Notts?
Some good points - Hurst getting some runs and Lancashire Thunder won...

“What a wonderful morning to wake up a Lancashire and Man Utd fan. When does the tiddlywinks season start?” At least Man Utd got one of their principle aims; to wreck my team Liverpool’s season ! I say my team but I am very lukewarm about all professional sport nowadays. It’s all been ruined by money , especially in the case of football by the Manc Arabs. The Grumbler writes about that in The Cricket Paper this week. I remember a teacher reminding me at the start of a term about something I’d said on the school camp where we always played a lot of cricket and I’d had a poor camp. It was 1973 and we were getting hammered by West Indies and holders Lancs had been put out of the Gillette by Middlesex ( we got revenge two years later in the final). I said resignedly “ England are rubbish, Lancashire are rubbish, and so am I “ 🙂

As others have said, Chilton takes the money and has to accept responsibility for the situation the club seems to be in. I'm not surprised to hear rumours that Chapple may have quit because of difficulty in working with Chilton. Chapple had his tactical failings as captain and coach and sometimes allowed his loyalty to the club to cloud his judgement (e.g. the ridiculous feud with Steven Mullaney) but at least he was very good at cricket. Chilton has got where he is by being a "good chap" who can be relied on to toe the line. He was made captain in order to do the bidding of over-authoritarian Watkinson; he had no authority with players such as Cork and Law, who mostly ignored him, and he captained "by numbers" according to a pre-arranged plan from which he was never able to depart, even when it was obviously going wrong (this was especially obvious in OD games). He was also a mediocre opening batter, averaging 22 in FCC. Cricket coach at Manchester Grammar School is where he should have stayed.
What we seem to have now is good players suddenly playing badly, which is usually a sign of dressing room unhappiness. That said, I must admit to feeling a strong sense of schadenfreude when the recently capped Hartley was clean bowled by the sacked Parkinson, who is twice as good as Hartley will ever be (but Hartley is definitely thought of as a "good chap").
