One rumour doing the rounds is that Lancashire are interested in quickie Zaman Akhter, his contract is up this year. He currently plays for...Gloucestershire! One rumour bites the dust! He's just signed a contract with Gloucs till the end of the 2025 season.

What the county needs to do is plan our recruitment knowing that the top four players will rarely be available. If you compare our recent lineup with the teams in division 2 it is clear that we will struggle without several newcomers. We will not get promotion when our batting lineup contains Singh or Fonseca, Flintoff and Bell at the same time. Yes good prospects for the future maybe but two years at least away from being good county players, and it is unfair to play them all without experienced men around them. Our bowling ranks are also increasingly threadbare. Why have Hartley Morley and Blatherwick gone backwards this year? We know finances are not good in the county game generally but Lancs are not the poorest and must open the purse strings to recruit topclass overseas players.

Think we have to get rid of Lancs players who don't play for Lancs Livingstone Buttler Salt Wood Hartley Blatherwick Bell Williams I don't know what the cost of having Livingstone/ Butler/ Salt on the books is. They are centrally contracted and I understand we are compensated when they play in the IPL. If there is a significant cost to us I would definitely get rid of Butler and Livingstone. I'm inclined to keep Salt because he seems to be more committed to Lancashire and I also think his England role could become T20 only. Earlier this year I thought he could end up playing all formats for England but things aren't going that way for him now.
Wood should be on a white ball contract and he is a good bowler for us in the T20.
Hartley I would keep for the T20 and develop Morley/ Barnard as a red ball bowler. If the rumours are true about Morley then it's Barnard.
Blatherwick has had plenty of chances and has failed to come up to county standard so I would release him although his contract runs until the end of next season.
Bell has been the biggest disappointment for me this season. Last year he looked really good as a wicketkeeper batsmen and capable of being a specialist middle order batsmen. He scored that 99 against Hampshire in the second championship game of the season but has declined so much through the season and seemed to have lost all confidence by the end of the season. I think he has been messed around moved up and down the order and even pushed up to open and keep wicket in the ODC. He is young and hopefully will get his form back. Would benefit from the guidance of a good coach. I would keep him.
Williams like most of Lancashire's first team has had a bad year. Could be linked to Tom Bailey's loss of form. When Williams and Bailey are opening the bowling together if Bailey is keeping things tight it makes it more likely that a batsman will make a mistake against Williams. Looking at our other seam bowler options (Bailey, Balderson, Aspinwall, Mahmood, Stanley, Blatherwick) I think we'll be needing Williams in the championship next year.

I forgot that Livingstone, Butter, Salt are paid by the ECB. I was just thinking since we never see them in CC what is the point. Last time Buttler played for Lancs in the CC was in July 2018 when our bowling was Anderson, Bailey, Onions, Clark, Parkinson. Livingstone was more recent 2021.
Overseas batsman and overseas bowler, to open with Bailey

Will Jennings stay? He's contracted until the end of next season, but he joined us originally to play Div1 cricket.
However, he also joined us to further his England ambitions. With England choosing Lawrence when Crawley was injured, he probably realises those ambitions are dashed.
It's interesting that he's playing in the Big Bash. If that goes well, that might deliver an IPL contract which would limit his availability to us anyway. In those circumstances, he might decide to see out his contract but give up the captaincy.
It's going to be an eventful winter, methinks.
