not greatly surprised, he was out of contract and this year was nowhere near the championship side, played one 50 over match and was no longer given much opportunity to bowl in the T20.
Safest hands in the club, great fielder.
Another case of all the way through the age groups but did he ever fulfill his potential?
Good luck and thanks Arron.

Yep one of those players who you could class as a bits and pieces player who would always struggle to command a first team place

Lancs can not only boast how many of their own academy / age-group players there are in their squad but there is currently a complete team under contract at other counties of former Lancashire age-group players:
Horton (Leics) Reece (Derby) Mullaney (Notts) Cockbain (Glos)
Dearden (Leics)
Procter (North) +Simpson (Middx) Clark (Surrey) Lilley (Leics) C Parkinson (Leics) Griffiths (Leics)
could add Critchley at Derbyshire.

An interesting list, Chris, I had not realised there were quite so many.
But Clark is the only one I regret losing since there is no simple replacement for him.
Mullaney and Simpson are excellent cricketers but were being kept out of the side by better players at the time they left. The rest are basically second division players (yes, I know where we are headed but our current team are still better than that)

An interesting list, Chris, I had not realised there were quite so many. But Clark is the only one I regret losing since there is no simple replacement for him. Mullaney and Simpson are excellent cricketers but were being kept out of the side by better players at the time they left. The rest are basically second division players (yes, I know where we are headed but our current team are still better than that) At the risk of being shot down. I would certainly add Horton. I suspect he was released for non-cricketing reasons. But in 2016 we struggled to find an opening partner for Hameed. Ending up putting Jones up there even when he was still in the scholarship scheme. The knock on of that is that they still think Jones is top order. Whereas, I suspect he would have been very succcesful giving the middle order some solidity this year. It's another story, but a top 3 signing last year instead of Chanderpaul, would have solved both issues.
We also missed Horton in 2017, a lack of top order forced Livingstone to bat at 3 up from 7 with mixed results. As for 2018 practically anyone of those listed would have walked into an opening partnership with Jennings.
Reece also showed us what we missed when in his first year for Derbyshire he scored a quick 100 against us in T20. Likewise he was released for non-cricketing reasons, justified as Old Trafford did not suit his bowling.
Mullaney has proved with time that we should have given him more opportunities - who were the players who kept him out of the team? Croft? Mull would have fared better when forced up the order unlike the latter.
Simpson, was a complete disaster of a decision. He was passed over in favour of Cross and Sutton. I hope we make the right choice given that next season we will have Buttler, Davies, Vilas, Guest and Lavelle. Although Guest is currently out of contract and Vilas and Buttler only have another year and we could lose them both for 2020.
Callum Parkinson is another, I'm not sure we might regret not keeping on. His form dipped this year but then whose didn't?
Clark is the interesting one. Whilst I agree there is no replacement to hand. Whether we miss him looking back in time will really depend on how succesful he is with Surrey. He might easily come back if it doesn't work out, look at Rikki Clarke.

Well, I did wonder about Horton when I wrote that. I thought his release was wrong at the time. He is certainly a good cricketer and, as you say, we could have used him but I'm not sure he has set Grace Road alight.
When I first saw Reece, I thought we had a winner but two successive poor seasons fully justified his departure, whatever the underlying reasons.
At the time Mullaney went, I am certain it was Kyle Hogg who was keeping him out of the team, surprising as it seems at this distance – I seem to remember Mullaney saying that in an interview.
And although Simpson was acknowledged as a fine young keeper, I cannot remember anyone suggesting that he should have been pushed ahead of Cross who looked at the time like Hegg's natural successor.

Clark is certainly going to be a big miss, arguably one of the best all-rounders in county cricket now. Not sure how he actually fits in the Surrey side though, although they will undoubtedly have a lot missing with England call-ups
