Duane Oliver signs three year Kolpak deal with Yorkshire Not blaming the player at all but another sad day for Test Cricket. The latest in a long line of foreign players quitting their Country to make a living. The irony on this occasion is that Olivier had just recently turned in a Man of the Series performance and looked to have sealed his place in the Test Side, as well as recently making his ODI debut. The rule requiring a certain amount of non-white players was never in his favour mind you.

Personally I am sick to death with players signing up to play County Cricket then pulling out as they have been “unexpectedly” selected to play for their country/ go on a training squad. How much are we going to see of Burns/Maxwell this year? How can you plan for a season when your overseas star gets pulled away? No. As much as I hate to say it, Yorkshire have it right here. As did Lancashire with Kyle Jarvis.

Jarvis walked out a year before his contract with Lancs expired to return to Zimbabwe. By mutual consent of course.
Whatever the situation with his final year he was with Lancashire four years and he left at the end of a season. People like Clive Lloyd and Wasim Akram were real Lancashire players, even if Akram did briefly play for someone else at the end of his career. Greenidge and Marshall at Hampshire, Rice and Hadlee at Notts, Wayne Daniel at Middlesex. They were real county players who would be back year after year and wouldn’t turn up playing for the opposition when you didn’t even realise that they had left your team. You knew they would be back unless their country was touring England. Many of the current overseas players are mercenaries who will play for you if there’s nothing better on offer at this precise moment in time. To be fair, James Faulkner actually appears to be one who is committed to Lancashire. Let’s hope I don’t want to delete that anytime soon.

The salary for playing for South Africa is not great. AS a fast bowler he never knows when an injury could come along and his career could suddenly be over.
Signing a three year contract with Yorkshire guarantees him a good income for his family. It is far from an ideal situation, and nobody likes to think of players doing things for the money, but at the end of the day it is a short career and he needs to make a living while he can
He isn't going to suddenly do one back to SA either. He is already a regular in the side but has chosen to sign a 3 year contract with YOrkshire so he will see that out at the very least.
