I've always had a certain regard for Stephen Parry who has kept his head up amid all kinds of rebuffs during his career and I am pleased for him that he has been picked for the MCC. But even with all the close-season activity that goes on these days, I still find it hard to believe they couldn't find some young prospect to choose for the spinner's spot rather than a guy who took three first-class wickets last season.

Don't Lancs normally go to UAE pre-season these days. With the notable exception of Broad (Notts are in South Africa), most of the other players will be there for their pre-season (apparently Worcestershire, Essex, Somerset are playing eachother out there at the time). I would imagine Lancashire and Warwickshire may also be out there. So the question that may well remain unanswered would be concerning Parkinson's fitness.

Not been on here for a while so sorry if i`am going over old news but How can Parry get another contract let alone a testimonial, he has hardly played any championship cricket in his ten years or more, he`s not even first choice spinner and has not been for a few years in 50 over or t20 matches.

Testimonials are a bit archiac these days considering what players are now paid but he's been there 10 years son that's probably the reason why. Thanks for the post Dutton they are always welcone

I`am sure there have been players who have also been there ten years or more but never got a testimonial, probably with a lot more games under their belts than Parry.

I`am sure there have been players who have also been there ten years or more but never got a testimonial, probably with a lot more games under their belts than Parry. By my reckoning:
Kyle Hogg debut 2001 last game 2014 = 14 years in first team Paul Horton debut 2003 last game 2015 = 13 years in the first team Karl Brown debut 2006 last game 2018 = 13 years in the first team John Crawley debut 1990 last game 2001 = 12 years in the first team
Tom Smith debut 2005 last game 2016 = 12 years in the first team
Oliver Newby debut 2002 last game 2013 = 11 year in the first team
Saj Mahmood debut 2002 last game 2012 = 11 years in the first team Nick Speak debut 1987 last game 1996 = 10 years in the first team
Ste Parry debut 2007 last game 2019 = 13 years in (and out of) the first team

If I didn’t know better Chris, I might think that you were stating that all the others were first team regulars whilst Parry is the only one who has been in “ and out of “ the team.
I am sure that you don’t mean to suggest this but it could be read like that.

Clearly Newby was also "in and out" and missed at least a couple of seasons through injury, the others were pretty much in the first team once they became regulars, when available or not injured. Parry was pretty much always "in" the one day team.
Hogg played 103 first class matches in 14 years Horton played 148 first class matches in 13 years Brown played 84 first class matches in 13 years Crawley played 138 first class matches in 12 years Smith played 100 first class matches in 12 years Newby played 44 first class matches in 11 years Mahmood played 92 first class matches in 11 years Speak played 123 first class matches in 10 years Parry has played 26 - with power to add - first class matches in 13 years
Going back to the original point of benefits, considering Statham had benefits in 1961 and 1969, Lloyd in 1977 & 1984, Hughes in 81 and 92. Glen Chapple might have missed out on a second. His benefit was in 2004 and he still played for the first team in 2015 some 11 years later.

Of course it gets messier when you add One Day and T20.
