Weather permitting, Essex will have some competitive action ahead of them starting this week when they meet Lancashire at The Cloudfm County Ground in a couple of two-day friendly matches as part of their pre-season preparations.
The first of those games starts on Tuesday followed by a second clash beginning on Thursday. After the weekend, Kent will be the visitors to Chelmsford in the final friendly. In accordance with Government COVID-19 guidelines, spectators will not be permitted to attend these matches.
Head Coach Anthony McGrath stressed the importance of the work out for his squad over the upcoming week, as they prepare for the start of the County Championship season which begins on Thursday 8th April against Worcestershire.
McGrath said: “They’ve been working hard in the indoor school and outside in the nets but now we have the opportunity to compliment all that effort with some competitive cricket in the middle.
“With six days of cricket, it will be a great opportunity for all of our squad to get some meaningful preparation in ahead of the season.
Most sides, ourselves included, are normally on foreign soil at this stage of their pre-season preparations when we would normally have four or five friendly matches. But because of circumstances, it’s not been the case this year so we just want to make the best of what we can.
“I’m sure we can gain a huge amount of benefit from these matches and we are just keeping our fingers crossed that the weather holds good.
“We have been able to practise outside for a while recently and all credit to the ground staff who have done a tremendous job in getting the ground ready for our practise and these matches.
“I’m sure that Lancashire, over the four days and then Kent next week will provide us with some good challenges which is what we want at this stage.”
The format for all three matches is based on both teams batting for a day each although should the weather intervene, adjustments will be made, with McGrath adding: “Really, it’s all about practise opportunities rather than the outcome of the game, and the opportunity to replicate what we have done in the nets and turn that into performances in the middle.”

Mahmood gets Cook twice in one day, Essex batting full 90 overs no matter how many wickets they lose

morning session 74/1 off 31 afternoon session 46/9 off 29
Mahmood has taken Cook twice for 4 and then 5 runs.
Jennings taken two wickets in the first 4 overs of the final 30 over session. Hartley just taken a third. Might yet see Cook again.
I see whoever is responsible for organising the squad numbers is still on furlough. Blatherwick still has an empty shirt back.
Wells and Bailey must be injured along with Gleeson, No Croft either. Would have expected then to take part at some time today but I've not seen them. Burrows and Moulton also absent.

Bailey and Croft are named in the extended squad for this warm-up
(KK Jennings, SMO Shah, AL Davies†, JJ Bohannon, SJ Croft, DJ Vilas*, RP Jones, GID Lavelle, DJ Lamb, L Wood, TW Hartley, TE Bailey, S Mahmood, LJ Hurt, JM Blatherwick, JP Morley)
I expect we'll see different players play between now and Friday.

But Bailey and Croft have not been on the pitch all day. Only the other 14 named. I would have expected Bailey especially, if fit, to play a part of a match as he is arguably our no 1 seam bowler. Everyone needs overs at this time of the year.
Lancashire will bat all day tomorrow. WHo knows what will happen from Thursday onward.
Although if side A bats all day on day 1 and side B simply bats all day on day 2, without taking into account the fall of wickets and that is then repeated over the following two days, I can't see the difference in calling it a 1x four day match or 2x two day matches.
The teams may be different for the Thursday / Friday match. But they can't exactly drive down new players at the moment. Surely, they are either in the bubble or not.

DAY ONE: CLOSE OF PLAY Paul Walter with 42 and Tom Westley who scored 38 proved the best of the Essex batsmen on the first day of their two-day friendly with Lancashire at The Cloudfm County Ground.
Under the match arrangement, both sides bat for a day and after a clatter of wickets post-lunch, a number of Essex batsmen paid two visits to the crease as the home side lost 13 wickets to post a final total of 161 runs by the close of play.
Walter and Westley added 84 for the second wicket but when both were dismissed within 15 balls after Lunch, the innings completely fell away as nine wickets were lost for the addition of just 30 runs.
Walter opened the innings with Alastair Cook but after striking a trademark cover boundary, the former England opener was dismissed three balls later for 4 when he edged a ball from Saqib Mahmood to Keaton Jennings at first slip, one of four wickets for Mahmood.
Despite some initial moments of playing and missing, Walter and Westley prospered with patience the watchword. A splendid cover drive by Walter raised the half-century partnership from 153 balls and at Lunch, the score was 74-1 from 31 overs.
But when Westley was caught off the thinnest of edges by the wicket-keeper for 38 with the total on 88, the innings fell into freefall.
Although Walter made 42 before edging to first slip, Feroze Khushi, Robin Das and Will Buttleman all failed to score. The fall of Buttleman’s wicket leaving the score on 91-6 brought the return of Cook to the middle but he managed only 5 before he was trapped in front of his stumps by Mahmood, the second time in the day that the England white-ball international had claimed his wicket.
Khushi and Das had another trip to the middle but departed for 10 and 0 before the enduring Adam Wheater collected 14 from 56 balls then became one of five catches behind the stumps and the tenth wicket to fall on the day.
Josh Rymell and Ben Allison combined for 19 in 14 overs with Rymell stroking the only maximum of the day but both fell to the gentle medium-pace of Jennings for 12 and 11 respectively.
Walter’s second knock of the day was brief, lasting seven balls for nought and it was left to Westley and Wheater to carry the side through to the close with Westley adding another 13 to his earlier contribution and Wheater 6 not out at the end of the 86 overs in the day’s play.

Croft down to bat I suspect that is simply wishful thinking in the eyes of the scorers. Would be unlikely that Croft came into bat after Hartley and Mahmood.
