After the draw against Sussex we are again at home against Northamptonshire who drew their first game as well against Kent, basically a one innings game with both side scoring over 400. Vanconcelos and Keogh both got centuries and Buck took three wickets in the first innings. They have three ex Red Roses players on teh books, Buck, Procter and Kerrigan only Buck played in teh first game Taken from the Northants website It’s every cricket lover’s fantasy. Summoned from work to represent your county at one of England’s most famous Test match grounds, you play a key role in a famous victory. It happened to Peter Pickering back in 1953. The 27-year-old Yorkshireman – a handy cricketer although better known as a professional footballer who kept goal for both the Poppies and the Cobblers in his time – was summoned to the office at British Timken one morning, given the keys to a car and told to head for Manchester to make his first-class debut for Northamptonshire. Pickering earned his unlikely call-up because the County had only ten fit players. He arrived at lunchtime on the first day and it was clear the bowlers were holding sway on a difficult pitch. Northamptonshire were eventually left to score 128 for victory and collapsed to 40-5 before Pickering hit a vital 37, setting the stage for a one-wicket win. It was the County’s first Championship triumph at Old Trafford at the 22nd attempt! Although not exactly a happy hunting ground even after ‘Pickering’s Match’, there have been some outstanding performances at Lancashire’s headquarters. In the opening Championship fixture of 1976 David Steele’s masterly 93 – plus 13 wickets in the match for pace bowler Bob Cottam – set up a 116-run victory at the start of a memorable season that saw Mushtaq Mohammad’s team finish second in the table. The County had won there in 1965 – and also went on to claim runners-up spot. On that occasion it was off-spinner Haydn Sully who did the damage with 6-20 in the first innings and 5-67 in the second. Kevin Curran – father of Ben – hammered a century there in the 1997 drawn game, and two years later the illustrious trio of Devon Malcolm, Paul Taylor and Graeme Swann shared nine wickets as Lancashire, set 311 to win by Matthew Hayden, slumped to 121 all out. But bad memories of past drubbings in Manchester came back to haunt Northamptonshire in 2013 – skittled for 62 on the first morning and beaten inside two days on a pitch that sparked a major controversy – and 2014, when Ashwell Prince’s undefeated 257 set the hosts on course for victory by an innings and 200 runs. It’s also worth noting that the County played their final Championship match of the 1914 season at Old Trafford. When Lancashire batted opener William Tyldesley was caught by Don Denton off fellow Wellingborough School pupil Tommy Askham for 92. Batsman and bowler would both die in the First World War while the catcher lost part of a leg. Tyldesley’s opening partner Harold Garnett was killed too. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE V LANCASHIRE – OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD PLAYED: 129 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE WINS: 18 LANCASHIRE WINS: 52 DRAWN: 59 ABANDONED: 1 LAST TIME OUT… Ben Duckett starred with the bat in Northamptonshire’s most recent Championship visit to Old Trafford in 2015, scoring a classy 134. Adam Rossington weighed in with 89 and the County were strong favourites to win until rain stopped play on the final day with Lancashire seven wickets down. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2643123

LV= Insurance County Championship, Group Three Thursday April 15 - Sunday April 18, 2021, 11am Emirates Old Trafford
Lancashire are the early pacesetters in Group Three having made the best of a weather-interrupted opening week of 2021 to claim the maximum 16 points on offer for the home draw against Sussex.
The Red Rose had the better of a game which was batting friendly, despite the time lost due to snow!
Dane Vilas was the star of the show with a magnificent 189 as Lancashire replied to Sussex’s 301 with 407. Sussex had reached 103-2 in their second innings by the time the wintery weather cut short the fourth day.
There were only three victories out of the nine Championship games last week, with them all coming in Group Two for Hampshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset.
Given some better weather over the next four days, captain Vilas and company will be confident of building on their encouraging start with a win against a team with a number of Lancashire connections.
Team news Lancashire are expected to choose from similar personnel as they did last week.
Opponents Northamptonshire were involved in a high-scoring home draw against Kent last week, a game which barely got into its second innings at Wantage Road.
Kent made 455 before the hosts rode on 154 from highly-rated opener Ricardo Vasconcelos to respond with 434. Kent finished on 42-1 in their second innings.
Northants claimed 15 points from the draw and sit second in the embryonic Group Three table.
Captained by wicketkeeper Adam Rossington, the county finished fourth in last season’s Bob Willis Trophy Central Group, winning one of five games.
A county who have recently had a reputation for white ball success, they were promoted from Division Two of the Championship in 2019 - second behind Lancashire - but were denied the opportunity to play in Division One in 2020.
Emilio Gay, a 20-year-old, is their big batting hope.
South African all-rounder Wayne Parnell is their overseas player across all formats this year, but he did not play against Kent.
Former Lancashire Championship winners Simon Kerrigan and Luke Procter were other absentees from that fixture.
Ex-Lancashire quick Nathan Buck recently signed a new contract at Wantage Road, and he forms an experienced seam attack with Ben Sanderson and Gareth Berg.
Previous meeting Having beaten Northants by 10 wickets at Emirates Old Trafford in May 2019, the two sides played out a high-scoring draw at Wantage Road in July.
Northants posted 442, including five wickets for Graham Onions, before Alex Davies’ career best 147 underpinned the Red Rose response of 315 all out early on day three.
The hosts then added 263-9 declared, setting Lancashire 391 to win before lunch on the final day.
The Red Rose then batted out almost 83 overs with comfort (275-4) thanks to fifties for Davies, Haseeb Hameed, Josh Bohannon and Dane Vilas.
What they said Keaton Jennings says he and opening partner Alex Davies are relishing the pressure which falls on them to lay a solid foundation for Lancashire’s batting line-up.
If Lancashire are going to win this season’s Championship title, they will need to build on big runs at the top of the order - something Jennings knows all too well having shared a productive opening partnership with Mark Stoneman when former county Durham won the title in 2013.
Jennings and Davies posted four and 61 against Sussex, sharing only eight.
The former said: “Myself and Al are really close friends, so we bounce off each other. We know each other’s game and know what makes each other tick.
“He is a small guy, I’m fairly gangly. The areas where bowlers have to bowl to him and to me are different. We complement each other nicely.
“If you know how he is feeling, it makes that partnership better. We read each other well. Hopefully, we can get some good partnerships going and get the lads off to a good start.
“When you can get through that new ball period, especially in early season, you can set yourself up for some nice big scores.
“There is always extra pressure on opening batters, your mistakes are highlighted more than most. But it’s a pressure we both enjoy.”
Ahead of the Northants clash, Red Rose assistant coach Mark Chilton added: “It wasn’t just Sussex. In the two weeks prior to that, there was a lot of good stuff going on from a lot of people.
“It wasn’t just the eleven that were on the park.
“We have to manage players through a busy period - five weeks on the trot.
“We all know how hard you have to work at Emirates Old Trafford to get results. We will think hard about the team we pick, have a look at the pitch and see what the weather is like.
“But we’re all very confident that there are 14, 15, 16 players who will all make key contributions to this side over the next few weeks.”
Timings of play As a mark of respect for the late HRH Prince Philip, there will be no play between 2.50pm and 4.10pm during Saturday’s third day when his funeral takes place.
That 80 minutes includes the tea break, so an hour’s play will be made up across the first three days. Play will run to 6.15pm on days one and two and 6.30pm on day three. Day four will run as normal. Play on all days will begin at 11am.

Glen Chapple has named a 12-man squad for Lancashire's LV= Insurance County Championship meeting with Northamptonshire at Emirates Old Trafford.
There are no new additions to the matchday squad from last week's draw against Sussex - with Liam Hurt and George Lavelle omitted following their selection for Lancashire's Second XI.
George Balderson (abdominal), Richard Gleeson (back) and Luke Wells (hamstring) are all continuing periods of rehabilitation with the Club's sports science and medical team.
Play will start at 11am tomorrow (15 April) and you will be able to watch all of the action from Emirates Old Trafford, via a live stream available for free on the Club website.
Lancashire Squad Dane Vilas (c), Tom Bailey, Josh Bohannon, Steven Croft, Alex Davies, Tom Hartley, Keaton Jennings, Rob Jones, Danny Lamb, Saqib Mahmood, Matt Parkinson, Luke Wood

Re-previous Northamptonshire matters referred to , one of my memories was this match www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Lancashire/Scorecards/60/60781.htmlNorthants were highflying that season and in particular Kumble was skittling most teams in what was a hot summer. The spinner who really impressed in the Northants first innings, however, was Mike Watkinson . By that stage in his career his spin and bounce made him a formidable operator and I was think it was a pity that he didn’t switch to spin earlier . My memory is usually fairly decent but it does play tricks. My recollection was that Watkinson also gave Kumble a bit of ham. Kumble certainly took some hammer but it looks like it was John Crawley amongst others. Looking at the team sheets, could anyone honestly say that this week’s game is anything like as appetising cast wise as was that one?

Still on old Lancs v Northants games, the Sat here was the first day’s Lancashire Cricket I ever attended. I had watched Roses Matches previously on the television. I’d also been to the Saturday of the Test match at Old Trafford in 69. www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Lancashire/Scorecards/30/30818.htmlStill remember my dad saying “we’re going to be a really good team“. You could say that this might have been predicted from the Sunday league win in 1969 , However, we hadn’t looked that good in the other two competitions that year and this was pretty early season. My other memories of the day apart from Shuttleworth and Lever’s very impressive bowling were David Lloyd , who looked really good, hitting a straight six and Clive Lloyd playing a magnificent back foot cover drive for four.Memory tells me that Lancashire were 108 for two at the close with David Lloyd 60 odd not out and Clive Lloyd 24 but as I remarked on a previous post, memory does play tricks. My recollection is of a nice day’s weather with no interruptions but on the same day the St Helens v Leeds RL Championship final at Bradford had a torrential downpour but produced the right result.

For the last game, we preferred Hartley to Parkinson. Tom bowled well but is he going to keep out Parkinson? Later in the season, Livingstone may be the only or second spinner. During the Hundred, Morley will have the field to himself!

During the Hundred, Morley will have the field to himself! It is the bowling especially the spin option which is the potential weakness in the RL50 competition.
No idea what bowing options Shreyas Iyer offers. Otherwise Jones supporting Croft and Morley. Potential team: Iyer, Jennings, Vilas, Bohannon, Jones, Croft, Lamb, Bailey, Hurt, Blatherwick and Morley. Lavelle, Wells, Shah, Burrows and Moulton in reserve.
