The cricketing gods heard I was on my way. I was actually stood at the ticket window waiting for the clerk to appear to get my train ticket when first heard the rumour. Was only offered the ticket on Monday by a friend whose son couldn’t go.
Anyone in Somerset now should shoot an albatross for luck.

If the ECB have any integrity at all they should uninvite India for 2022 at least. Or that should have been the threat sent last night to the BCCI. The game is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021 to 2023 - suspect the current negotiations are likely to include playing the 5th Test alongside / next to the T20s that India are due to play in England next year rather than threatening to withdraw the invite.

Quite disgraceful. The IPL rules everything. But I hardly think you can criticise the ECB – they stand to lose £20million and what were they supposed to do if the Indians refused to turn up? If it was that then they should be fined a huge amount and banned from test cricket for 12 months.

Edited from a longer post on the White Rose Forum....
The India players signed a letter at midnight on Thursday telling their board they would not be playing the fifth Test at Old Trafford due to fears over covid, Telegraph Sport understands. ..............despite reassurances from the ECB about the covid protocols,..... many fearing a further spread of covid could prevent them from playing in the IPL which restarts in the UAE on Sept 19. There are now high-level talks between the ECB and BCCI over whether the match was forfeited by India. .............. The row over forfeiture or cancellation has huge ramifications for the ECB. If the match is forfeited by India then the ECB are covered by insurance for losses of around £40m, ........ .. But if the match is cancelled by Covid, the ECB are not covered by insurance leaving them with a huge whole in their finances, a year after losing £16m. The matter could end up being resolved by the ICC’s dispute resolution committee.
The ECB are also furious that India’s head coach, Ravi Shastri, attended a book launch in London last week along with 150 members of the public. Shastri was the first member of the India party to test positive.................. The book launch had not been cleared by the ECB’s covid compliance department. Three ways to resolve the Old Trafford Test 1) The match is rearranged India are keen to reschedule and have offered to play the final Test next summer..................India are already due to tour England for a limited-overs series next summer, so a Test could potentially be played before or after that, even if it meant shifting other parts of the schedule. 2) The match is forfeited If the match is forfeited, England are covered by insurance.............Under this scenario, England would be covered for the estimated £40 million they stand to lose from this match being cancelled. England would also be declared the winners of the game. 3) The match ends in the courts If the match is not rearranged, and India refuse to declare the match forfeited ................ then the match could ultimately be decided in the courts. This would be a deeply undesirable scenario for the ECB, who have worked to improve relations with India in recent years...... Under the ICC rules for Test matches affected by Covid-19, the result could be determined by their dispute resolution committee should the ECB choose to lodge a complaint. The rules for the ongoing edition of the World Test Championship allow for matches to be cancelled - rather than forfeited - if there is “significant impact” from Covid-19. The interpretation of this clause could be worth £40 million to the ECB, and help decide the next World Test Championship winners.

The ECB's integrity is known to be paper thin, Allen Stamford exposed it back in 2008. The BCCI has more than enough bullion to buy the ECB off yet again. Stamford, pay per view, the Hundred, the ECB continues to dine at the Devil's table. The interests of cricket, it's ethos, can only be preserved by maintaining a credible programme of Test fixtures, it is the pinnacle of the game, we all know that. Actions such as today totally undermine Test cricket as being reliable and credible.

Most Britons follow cricket, one way or another during the British Summer, from Politian's and rock stars to Fred and Frieda Bloggs. There are those who follow the game on the sports pages to those go to games week in week out, but they all share a deep seated pride in our national sport and it's traditions. Unfortunately, the custodianship of cricket at national level is in far from safe hands, as can be seen by the introduction of the ridiculous Hundred, the implications of such tournaments destroying the heart our national sport are now laid bare. If any good can come out of the debacle of the cancellation/abandonment of the OT test then it must be ECB's termination of the Hundred competition as soon as contracts allow. There cannot be a soul in the land who does not realise that the IPL was the primary cause of yesterday's last minute debacle, but, as cricket followers, we know that also underlying the issue was the fact that the Hundred was prioritised at the height of the Summer forcing the India Tests into the hinterlands. We need to ensure that pressure is bought to bear on the ECB on this matter, contact MPs.
