Saw quite a bit of him live. Saw his hat-trick at the MCG in 94 and also his 700th ( I think ) at MCG in 2006. However, the one I will remember the most was 4 day game Lancashire V Hampshire at Old Trafford in 2007. I took my godson and we were queueing for chips at lunch when starstruck Thomas said “ There’s Shane Warne” . He walked past us in the queue and said “you don’t mind if I jump the queue do you lads. The food downstairs is a bit too healthy for me”.
That afternoon, I was desperately looking forward to watching him bowling to another legend, V.V.S. Laxman. Of course Laxman got out for 10 to a silly hook shot off an innocuous medium pacer after facing one over of Warne and then Warne got injured.
I actually saw him on the losing side once at Liverpool when Lancashire won by an innings; he got four wickets in his only go.
That he was a fantastic bowler has been said many times here but what a cricketer all round; always knew what the game demanded with the bat as well.
RIP and deepest sympathy to his family.
