Sad news, I remember his “skippy” action.

Very sad. I remember him getting Viv Richards LBW in the first game I went to at Old Trafford in 1979.

Very sad. Much underrated bowler who had the ability to hit the stumps of very fine batsmen. He could do extraordinary things with the ball ; much slower but quite Akram like in the way he could make the same delivery swing in/out and then after bouncing it would swing or seam or both out/in. I remember the first time I saw him was in a Sunday League game at Southport against Essex in 1974 . I can honestly say I have not looked at the scorecard but I think Essex scored around 195 which was a pretty decent score then . I will find out tomorrow if I’m wrong but I have a feeling his figures were 1-25 from 8 overs. My father recognised him in the crowd in the late 90s. I would never have had the confidence but dad had no inhibitions that way and engaged him in conversation and said he was delighted to be recognised. He told dad that he had a tip from selectors that he was really close to selection in the mid 70s. Of course he would get nowhere near these days as I doubt he ever reached 80s for speed. He also said that he never knew what the ball was going to do which was refreshingly honest but not quite Akram or Anderson! Very sad news. Completely agree with Des, a much underrated, and wholehearted, bowler.

Excellent coach apparently as well, in his post-cricket career. But who at Lancashire decided to title the obit. as Robert Ratcliffe. Did anyone know him as Robert?
