Yes - be ironic if he does it again next week! Could have done with him yesterday alongside the very promising Morley.

That is good to see. I think he'd only taken three wickets at a 100 and plenty this season before yesterday. Will always have a soft spot for him as an integral member of our championship winning team.

Has announced his retirement today. Shame he went downhill after his only test.

It was up and down after the Test match. I remember watching him bowl a brilliant spell at Sangakarra at the Oval, can't remember the year but after he played that Test. Definitely a question of what might have been but still an estimable career, an integral part of the championship winning team.

Has announced his retirement today. Shame he went downhill after his only test. ********************************************** Yes, it's a rather sad story isn't it! I seem to remember hearing, at the time of his test representation, a couple of people stating that he was chosen to play for England at totally the wrong time. At a time when his form for Lancs. had just taken a bit of a downturn. I wonder if anyone can confirm that or would like to comment?

From memory I think so.
Real shame his career tailed off. He was a quality young spinner who played a major part in our title winning year. The 9 for at Liverpool was a highlight that makes him a Lancashire legend.
Very happy retirement to Simon. Wish him all the best in whatever he does.

Good luck to him probably go back to Fulwood and Broughton, yes his Test Match was a mare but he got to play in one because he earned the place on merit

Played 10-12 league matches for each of the last two years, less before when he would have played more for Northants on a Saturday. Suspect he doesn't charge then £700 per match.

Badly let down by England . When he played, England had started introducing players gradually into dressing room so they knew their teammates. He had none of that. Atrocious captaincy by Cook( who was pretty useless from that point of view) , not just in not bowling him second innings but in saying before the match “ I’ve not seen him bowl”. May have been honest but you don’t say it, do you?
Think he was a fragile character but so for example was Phil Tufnell and he played enough Tests and won a few for England too. Decent management at Lancs may have recussitated him but not certain ; sometimes the players haven’t quite got it.
Loved at Ormskirk where, the week after Lancs championship win in 2011, he was there helping to dry the ground before their final game in the days when the league season ended after the Championship because they didn’t have to fit in the 100 ….e

Yes, unfortunately his form had started to desert him when he was picked by England. Really important player for us at his peak, though. As others have said, the 9-for at Aigburth will live long in the memory. I remember one of his first games against Warwicks at OT. They decided to go after this young rookie spinner, but that was a big mistake as he soon had them back in the pavilion. I was sat near some Warwicks fans, and I recall one of them commenting, 'this young spinner's not bad is he?' Indeed he wasn't.

Nice comments above folks. I think it was his debut Silly Point though could be wrong. Gary Keedy had broken his collar bone. I knew he was playing for Ormskirk at the time, and also knew that my friend David Snellgrove , certainly one of the five top cricketers in the Liverpool competition this century, would be familiar with him. His first beautifully flighted ball had me texting Dave, saying that I liked the look of this and Dave responded. “High hopes for Simon. He can bowl” OldhamExile kindly brought this article to my attention www.thetimes.co.uk/article/simon-kerrigan-small-part-of-me-wishes-they-could-take-england-cap-away-zvfp2ddppWell worth getting a copy of Saturdays times for this if you still can or taking advantage of any free article offers to get through the pay wall. I have to admit that, despite my loathing of anything remotely Murdochs related, I subscribe just for Michael Atherton’s writing. The article also referred to this statement nccc.co.uk/news/simon-kerrigan-retires-from-professional-cricket/
