Thought you might like to know..... Would have thought the former South African Test cricketer who suggested it would have been more in the know, but I just don' know anymore, not that it will keep me awake at night .... That's interesting. There's every chance CSA could or should have done more. But wonder how much buying out the contracts would cost. Presumably a lot when the IPL own some of the South African franchises. Or changed the date but why would NZ agree?

www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13041060/south-africa-defend-weakened-test-squad-for-new-zealand-series Although the series would have been agreed on up to five years ago New Zealand could have played ball and agreed to put the series back a few weeks with the SA20 Final on the 10th, but that would have been a nightmare logistically ie. tickets, hotels etc etc so understand why they refused, and it would also have affected the strength of the squads competing in the Plunkett Shield which is the last chance for players to push for a place in the New Zealand team to play Australia, which is obviously the series they want to win most.
I think there is some flexibility in the T20 contracts, you have cases where the Indian Test selectors have pulled players briefly to play in a Zonal 4-day game, and similar has happened in Australia where the selectors thought it would be more beneficial for a player to play a Sheffield Shield game. Slightly different for a Test series obviously ....
Not sure why Steve Waugh? felt the need to pipe up, it's none of his business.

Not sure why Steve Waugh? felt the need to pipe up, it's none of his business. Apoligies but I think I may have jumped in on the "not thinking they could compete" behind the reasoning but all this really smacks of the same thing: money.
South Africa, like England or Australia could have tried to tempt players from their franchise contracts but what with? Do they have the money? What can they offer?
Blame franchise cricket not the test schedule set 5 years ago. Who would not want to impress playing for Sunrisers Eastern or (Mumbai Indians) MI Cape Town where might that lead for a player.
As you say, the reorganisation - and the money needed - to avoid the clash of dates once franchise cricket rocks the boat and says when they will play would be prohibitive. Why would the IPL teams clash their international tournaments in the future? Wont be the last time.

The SA Board said they would get bigger overall attendances and more revenue from 5 ODI's than they would if they played 3 Tests...very sad

Why would the IPL teams clash their international tournaments in the future? Wont be the last time. I don't know if it would be possible for the I.C.C to threaten India with a suspension from all forms of International cricket unless the 6 Indian Kerry Packers who run franchise cricket in all the major Test playing nations agree to meet up to talk of ways to safeguard the future of Test cricket, drastic maybe but something needs doing. As it is those 6 owners won't be happy until India are the world champions across all formats, and if nothing is done that will happen, and continue happening.
And the players, yeah it must be nice to slap a 35-ball 80 in a final to win your franchise side a tournament you were paid £500,000 for a months work and getting your poster up on a few 1000 bedroom walls is no bad thing, but surely the better players still want to be Tested in the longest format of the game, and not just jump when some franchise offers you another massive contract, there must come a time when you've got more than enough money, and franchise cricket ain't going away sadly, you could give it a miss for a few years ...
Sport is all about memories, would you rather tell the grandkids about the day you middled everything for an hour, or the day you batted all-day on a pitch that was turning square against the best spinners in the game, or the day you survived all day on a dodgy track with 3 speedsters trying to knock your block off. I know which I'd prefer to boast about....

Whole raft of records in the current Test match @sylhet between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka:
SL Captain Dhananjaya de Silva 102 + 108 and Kamindu Mendis 102 + 164 is only the third time two players from the same team had scored twin-hundreds in a Test match, the Chappell bros in 74 which I remember well, and then Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq for Pakistan -v- Australia in 2014 that I didn't.
It was the first time two batsmen from the same side scored twin-centuries batting no.6 or lower, and Kamindu Mendis(25) playing in only his 2nd Test became the first batsmen to score twin-centuries batting no.7 or lower, he came in at no8 in the 2nd innings.
In their two innings combined Sri Lanka scored 528 runs after the fall of their fifth wicket in both innings, which unsurprisingly is a best in Tests for them, but only the 5th most overall - right lads we're into the tail now!
Latest: Sri Lanka 280 + 418 (Were 57-5 and 113-5) Bangladesh 118 + 47/5
