Paul Allott said he thought Matt Hurst would be the wicket keeper for the first championship games of the season during the commentary on the Lancashire warm up game today. Presumably this would mean that George Bell would be in the team as a specialist batsmen.

I agree with you that Bell looks a shoe in for the First XI so does that mean Hurst is a better keeper, or do they think Bell will score more runs if he doesn't have the responsibility of the gloves?

Allott has just said Salt is unavailable at the start of the season (yes) and Buttler will play a game or two but they don't know when (what)!

In the One Day Cup last year Bell opened and Hurst/ Lavelle kept wicket.

I posted yesterday there are rumours that England want Buttler back in the Test team, this would only seem to support those rumours. I'd forgotten George could bowl.

Yes, but there will always be rumours. But there is no way that Buttler will play championship cricket prior to the summer's tests. Except if he comes back from the IPL early specifically to do so. That would mean that the Test place is guaranteed and someone like Hurst loses his 1st XI place. Buttler would have to go out on loan. It's IPL followed by ICC T20.
Just listening on playback to Allott saying Bruce with 10 centuries behind him .... will be in contention for a 1st XI spot. Really? Scott Read replying maybe the signing of Bruce is to add a touch of experience to the mix.
He's clearly signed to play and score heavy runs. Just like a pro at club level. Will find out in a couple of hours if he lands a franchise gig. But that should not take away from the championship.

Great fight today. Hope this is the first of many.
I know its been a grim start to the season but seeing the younger players forge a career has been something to cling to.
Looks a really talented guy
Well done Matty!

Don't forget he also performed very well last week too, top scored in that disastrous first innings and proved to be second highest in second innings. Not a bad keeper either! I concur, well done Matty!

Probably the most solid player at the crease. 9 games 440 runs at 40.00 and he is only 20. Taken 20 catches as wicket-keeper this year.
I'd say better than Bell already whose average is 26.36.

I'd agree that he's probably the one positive to come out of this season so far. To be fair to Bell, he would probably be doing better if he was batting at no.7.

I agree that Hurst is an excellent prospect and is one of the few bright spots this season. He also impressed at the end of last season in both the One Day Cup and the last couple of championship games. I do feel sorry for George Bell who I think is an excellent keeper batsmen and his place would have been assured in the side if Hurst had not been around but he still has some way to go as a specialist batsmen, particularly batting at No4 when most of the other batting line up is struggling.

His batting reminds me of Warren Hegg, Lets hope he turns out as good as him behind the stumps as well

He has certainly been one of the few positives of the season so far. I wonder how long it will be before he is offered the franchise dollar.
