I think that’s the standard term used now - certainly most commentators seem to employ it. Makes sense to me, as works for men’s and women’s cricket. Surely in a men's game though he is a nightwatchman? Well indeed he can still be. But in the spirit of a more inclusive game played professionally by women as well as men, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to me to modify that in the same way I’m unconcerned that ‘batsman’ have morphed into ‘batters’ and ‘third man’ is now ‘third.’ And it all seems more sensible than the alternative when watching the women’s game: a ‘watch woman’ would sound odd and a ‘fine third woman’ would sound uncomfortably like a position created by Finbarr Saunders 🙂 |
