I'm concerned about our batting options not only for this game but for the future. I think that we have to accept that we cannot count on Livingstone or Butler due to England and IPL commitments. Both Vilas and Croft are coming towards the end of their careers. Which leaves us very few options. At the moment we have Balderson batting out of position in my opinion as a stand in opener and it certainly isn't ideal to be opening after bowling 21 overs. There seem to be few reserves in the second XI, Shah seems to have been around a few years and not broken into the first team so I'm not surprised that he is being released. Lavelle is a wicket keeper batsmen maybe he could develop into a specialist batsmen. The situation with Taylor Cornall seems odd, he was picked for a couple of RLC games and didn't do much wrong although his opportunities were limited batting down the order so why is he playing for other teams 2nd XI? Hopefully Ben Walkden and George Bell will continue to progress. I believe Rob Jones' contract is up at the end of next season so it will be a crunch season for him next year. Phil Salt to be added to the mix next season.

Phil Salt to be added to the mix next season.
Phil Salt is a straight replacement for Alex Davies so when Livingstone and Butler are away on England duty or playing in the IPL we are in the same position. It only takes one or two specialist batsmen to be injured or out of form and we are struggling to play a balanced team.

It is being reported that the prolific aussie opener marcus Harris who played for Leicester this year has turned down two offers from them as he is going to sign a higher offer from another county.
I hope it us but I don't have any information on that.
He is the kind of signing we should look for. Had his chances with the national side which probably won't come again. Is not an ipl type player so will likely give the same availability as Vilas.
You are right it's the batting in terms of depth and quality that let's us down in all 3 formats.

With the Hundred throwing a spanner in the works it is getting very difficult to find good overseas players who will be available all season.
Not sure what the plan is with Balderson - batsman or bowler. I presume his opening the batting was just due to Jennings injury.
I'm sure that Livingstone will regain his red ball form but he is bound to be in the Hundred.
Jones didn't have a good season last year in either white ball or red....

Sorry, Des. It was a bit of a last minute decision. Glad I went, though - other versions of cricket can hardly ever create that kind of drama!

The combination of the Hundred and IPL is going to seriously limit the amount of county cricket a lot of players are available for. This includes both overseas players and white ball specialists such as Livingstone. This makes it even harder to find quality overseas players harder the Marcus Harris possibility mentioned by Redandrosey sounds like a good option.
Balderson did a really good job as a stand in opener but surely his long term future is as an all rounder batting in the middle order. In the Hampshire game he was the best seamer after Bailey. It's not realistic to expect somebody to bowl 20 overs and then open the batting.

Paul Allott speaking in The Guardian
‘“Warwickshire have done a sterling job and finished off the season with a good win on a really good pitch and set up the game well by doing all the right things. I thought they were slightly negative when they played here, but that worked for them in the end.”’
Pity he had to put the carping bit in the end true that it was. It’s annoyed me when Warwickshire’s Captain in 2010 (can’t remember who it was) said “ Congratulations to Lancashire. They took advantage of the home conditions on their own grounds” . Lancs had an identical home and away record that year (W5 D1 L2 ). It was just that Aigburth gave us a chance that Old Trafford never had given us.
‘Allot was effusive about the progress of his young charges, particularly the emergence of Josh Bohannon, Tom Bailey and George Balderson and the progress of Matt Parkinson in all forms of the game. He was less keen about the structure of the English game.
“The championship is undermined. It is not prioritised in the way it should be, it is marginalised into the margins of the season. We really need to concentrate our efforts on producing cricketers of all sorts, red-ball and white-ball cricketers. If we don’t, English cricket will get into a mess. You saw that this summer when there was nowhere for people to practise or play, and we were bemoaning the lack of upper-order players for England. It is quite clear the schedule doesn’t suit. It seems we give serious thought to the County Championship on a perennial basis but we really have to grasp the nettle this time.”’
On the latter aspect I agree with Allott completely.

Allott also said "Winning championships is where we aspire to be, it is how we try to set ourselves up. We haven’t had an overseas player in the County Championship this year, we’ve had to rely on homegrown talent, which is good for us. We’re nearly there, but not quite. We aspire to win trophies and I don’t see any reason why we can’t win one or two of them next year."
Is Vilas not an overseas? But as you are allowed 2 why not get two and win trophies in 21 not talk about it for next year.
Happy to charge over £5 a pint and screw members and fans in many other ways but rather keep that money in the bank than giving the team the best chance of winning. Pay sussex the compensation to get salt now and get an overseas and win. I hate them trying to make a virtue out of this we were content to get close we put our faith in our young players.
Yes they put so much faith in Jones that they dropped him for the final match with the attitude that we may as well play six bowlers for all the runs he will make.
Allott has made some good signings so while he is an unpleasant character he doesn't deserve all the critiscm. However I think it's as well he is retiring. Just wish Gidney would go too.

Of course Vilas is an overseas, Allott was either misquoted, or has a selective memory - or both.

Is Vilas not an overseas? But as you are allowed 2 why not get two and win trophies in 21 not talk about it for next year. The new ECB rules stipulate three years' residence is enough to make you qualified to play for England (as in the case of Jofra Archer). As I understand it, Vilas and his family have lived here for at least that time. So he is no longer regarded as an overseas player and Lancashire could have had two signings from abroad if they had wanted them.
