I tink those of us who doubted giving Croft new deals might be in the egg on face category tonight He's certainly having a good season but it is worrying that there is nobody coming through the seconds pushing for his place.

He's certainly having a good season but it is worrying that there is nobody coming through the seconds pushing for his place. Good point and with the possible reduction of fixtures next season will mean second team players will have even less opportunity, as for the game basically a one innings game Look at who is being picked for the seconds this year, and bearing in mind that they normally bat on club pitches. For instance Rob Jones only started scoring runs for the 2nds in the T20.
The openers in all games are in the Academy (Walkden and Fielding). Fielding is the second top scorer, three scores over 70 but only averaging 32. Walkden has a top score of 81 but averages 20. The are both aged about 20, even if they were averaging over 100, Lancashire would not put them in the first team. They are happy to encourage Fielding to play Minor County cricket. George Bell is the only player who has played in all the 3 day championship games (five so far this season excluding today) - scored one century and an 80 in another. Almost 250 runs at 35 - is that pressure on the first team? England under 19s last winter. Matthew Hurst scored a century in the first game, 58* in the second and has disappeared completely - exams, injury, who knows? Lavelle is the top scorer over 350 runs top score 168. Nowhere near a Lancashire squad this year. He has not even played for his club for over a month, he must be injured. The club’s communications team probably don’t even know why he is not selected. Take today’s article, their idea of communicating anything about the seconds is: George Bell captains the side, which includes several Lancashire Academy players. They haven’t even put the 2nds results on the website, try clicking on Fixtures and Results and filtering to Seconds, last week it just showed the cancelled game against one of the UCCEs, now it just shows furture fixtures, no results or click on the Academy page and the profiles are a year out of date: cricket.lancashirecricket.co.uk/teams/boys-academy/
On the bowling front Joe Mennie (who has or is about to have a British Passport has played twice) aged 34. And we have just been told that Will Williams (aged 30) has been on the radar for a while. (Because he has a British Passport??) A lot of the other bowlers are in the Under 18s. Barnard, Boyden, Aspinwall for example.
To my mind the seconds are being run to assess players for the future, not for 2022. Today’s second XI side includes three players making their debut in the 2nds championship (Vause, O’Sullivan and Barnard) probably all 17 or 18. In Lancashire’s terms that could mean 4 or 5 years from the first team.
From memory, the seconds played a couple of games last year where the average age was about 20. Arguably the reason why they are so young, and so far the firsts, is that the club have given up on many recent academy batsmen such as Perry, Fluck, Crawley, Chughtai, Dorsey all of whom were in the acadmy in 2018/19 and now playing Minor County cricket rather than maturing into possible first team players.

Great spell by Williams and a great ball by Bailey to dismiss Burgess but, unfortunately, our bowling attack is not strong enough overall for us to cash in. There's nothing in the pitch for Parkinson and Vilas can't risk bowling Lamb so we'll probably be chasing a few too many and end up batting out for a draw. Can anyone shed any light on Lamb's thoroughly disappointing season so far? He's scoring no runs and taking very few wickets at a very expensive rate.

We’ve been awarded 5 penalty runs for the infringement of a Warwickshire batsman running down the pitch

They think they've got more than enough runs (I think they're right) and want a crack tonight. Doubt the five runs will make any difference.

Agreed, really shows that more fire power needed and Balderson and Lamb can’t really be played together in a four man pace bowling unit. Least not on current form. Neither really doing the business as far as runs are concerned either. Balderson: 7, 23*, 5, 15, 4*, 11, 4, 19 Lamb: 16, 41*, 3, 18
What price Williams seeing out the season with Lancs? Adds predictability (which could of course be hammered these days) to the 50 over team then the last few championship games - on the assumption no announcement means no decision yet, so no one else in mind. The’d have to give him a number, though.

Josh Bohannon, dropped first ball by Alex Davies rediscovers his best form and scores a magnificent 150+ not out, as he and Rob Jones with a run-a-ball 85 help Lancashire to a surprising victory on the 4th day with 10 overs to spare.
That, or we'll get skittled for 150 inside two sessions.

When Davies reached his century he made a great point of indicating the Warwickshire badge on his cap and when he was dismissed he ignored the attempts of at least one Lancs player to offer congratulations. This suggests that his departure from Lancs was rancorous and that he feels resentful about it.
