Bell might have also been worried that with who was at the other end and with who to come if he waited too long to get to 100 he might not make it if the others get out cheaply. He's another along with Balderson who should be playing every week unless he's injured or needs a rest.

Last season George Bell looked the part as a wicket keeper batsmen batting at 6. He hasn't made it yet as a specialist batsmen yet, batting at 4 has been made much harder due to the poor form at Wells and Bohannon. We have already tried Balderson at 4. Who else is there to use at four? We might get one championship game out of Phil Salt in August before he returns to white ball England duties but we need a long term solution.

Livingstone & Bohannon enjoyed the luxury of being brought in at 7, which benefitted them greatly. Agree SP. Bell, Balderson, Hurst (& Lavelle) would all be more comfortable coming in at 6 but the departures/retirements/unavailability of Vilas, Croft, Mitchell, Jones, Salt (all experienced middle order batsmen) plus the underperforming Bruce, has left a gaping hole at 4 and 5. The pressure is suddenly on the youngsters to deliver and it's not been helped by experienced pro's falling short. Over the winter on this forum when the 2024 squad was beginning to take shape it was mentioned about the problems Lancs could face if the youngsters have a drop in form. They can't even sink or swim because there is nobody to replace them.

Why is he opening the batting 10,6,18,56, 6, 4 = 16.66
Balderson would be better... he did open when Jennings was injured

I think it’s dreadful what’s happened to Bell, forced to go on and on when in a sane world - or at a proper club - he would have had a prolonged break months ago, to work on his technique and rediscover his undoubted talent. I don’t disagree that Flintoff might’ve done better, but he’s even more in need of protection. These are young people who deserve the right support so they can have proper, fulfilling careers, not be sacrificed by incompetent and cowardly old men who are loyal only to the people paying them and don’t seem to care who gets sacrificed along the way. It sickens me.
