I hope that in an effort to win we don’t do something stupid such as, for example if the first session was lost to the weather, declare and give Yorkshire two sessions to score the 225 they would need for victory. Why not. The only remote chance we have of winning the championship is by winning the last 3 matches. I’d be thinking about declaring overnight if there’s weather around tomorrow

I think 'remote' is optimistic. Surrey have 35 points more than us. If we were to win the last three games and pick up, say, 65 points, they would only need around 30 to keep ahead of us. They could get those from three low scoring draws and given that they're unbeaten all season I don't think they'd have a problem doing so.

If (and it's a big if) we win our final 3 games then Surrey can't have 3 draws because one of their games is against Lancashire.

Don't forget Hampshire; they look likely to beat Northants

John W., fair enough I hadn’t looked to see who we were playing, just the number of games left.
Back on the field, Lancs have scored at 6.51 per over before declaring, Yorks have been asked to score at 3.59.
Is that a fair/reckless declaration, or any other words?

I think it's a reasonable declaration. It gives an incentive to Yorkshire to go for runs and gives us enough overs to have a chance of bowling them out. If it all goes wrong and Yorkshire win, it could mean us ending up 4th rather than 3rd which is hardly a disaster.

The way I look at it the only 3 positions that matter are the bottom 2 and the number 1. We might as well risk losing the game in order to try and win it. We've got ourselves in a decent position at lunch now it's up to the bowlers and the weather.

Parkinson really does need to develop some variations if he's to put doubt in batters' minds in first class cricket. Bowled some decent looking leggies, but looked a bit easy to defend.

Unfortunately, the pitch has flattened out - probably the result of repeated use of the heavy roller - and Lancs don't have the out and out pace needed to dislodge batters whose only ambition is to stay in. Lancs obviously thought that, having been already used, the pitch would deteriorate and the spinners would make hay but the only time the pitch looked tricky was after tea on the first day when there was sideways movement and variable bounce.
Before the season we were the bookies' favourites to win the title but third is the best we are going to do and tbh I think that's a fair reflection. Maybe if Mahmood hadn't got injured...
Off for rain now so that's just about that.

You couldn't get two more contrasting 2nd innings...best illustrated in that Yorkshire managed only 1 maiden in the 43 overs they bowled while Lancs had 26 in 63 overs... Got a bit tedious towards the end and thankfully the rain turned up.
If only that ball hadn't ended up in that puddle......

Chapple blaming Yorkshire for not giving it a go but they had far more to lose. He's right that we lack a really fast bowler but the real reasons for our falling slightly short this season were our poor performance against Essex and our lack of enterprise against Gloucestershire.

Mathematically we can still win the championship but realistically it is between Surrey and Hampshire and we are playing for third place with Essex.
