Victory.. Shows how important was Bailey's 24 in the first... From the commentary Essex seem to have only two types of pitch - a road or a minefield....
This is a match where on average a batsman survived 19 balls and scored 9....

I said on the Essex YouTube channel last night that I had far from given up this game. Just love winning against them.

Essex lost the match when they lost the toss. Serves them right for preparing a disintegrating cart track but what has happened to pitch inspections? Not so long ago the inspectors routinely turned up if 16 wickets went down in a day's play. Yesterday an unbelieveable 26 wickets went down but, apparently, no reaction at all.

Pitches within 30 miles of the capital are exempt.
It might not be a Test ground but I still suspect that Essex could help the ECB launch a East Anglian franchise. They’ve always been part of the chosen few from the days in the 90s when southern journalists like Blofeld used to effectively pick the Test team. Imagine a result like that at Old Trafford or Taunton.
Surprise there aren’t more people on here tonight. I just could never overstate how much I love wins over Essex!

The folly of trying to play championship cricket at this time of year being completely exposed both at Chelmsford and Southampton. The policies of the ECB over the last 20/30 years have caused this mess with no sign of any improvement. It's time for genuine cricket lovers, who are in a position to do so, to rise up and oust the vandals at the ECB who have destroyed this great game. Sillypoint, is it that preparing a pitch at this time of year is troublesome, or is it that weather conditions at this time of year make batting tough? Is this time of year similar to April? Both. At this time of year, fresh pitches are in short supply for groundsmen. Whether Essex wanted to prepare a sub-standard pitch, or couldn't avoid it, I can't say. Next week the weather will have a big say as it's going to be much colder, probably only 12 degrees at OT. Not good for spinners(or spectators). Chapple once left Parky out as he said it was too cold for him to grip and spin the ball. The weather can also be bad and cold in April, though in recent years it has been very good, and in terms of light, playing in mid-April is equivalent to playing in mid-August. Playing in mid-September is equivalent to playing in mid-March. Most league cricket has already finished yet we are still trying to play 'so-called' first-class cricket. Championship cricket should be played May thru August.

I said on the Essex YouTube channel last night that I had far from given up this game. Just love winning against them. Brilliant win that, given conditions went against us and half our side are away with England or injured. If Lancs are going to be docked points for some obscure disciplinary offence, surely Essex should be docked points for a wicket like that? Lancs should complain - can't remember the last time we produced a pitch like that. It's bad for the game. Best thing about the victory was the performance of Bell. Scoring 40 runs across the two innings was a top effort - shows that the hype is justified. Will we see Boyden for the last game?

Having won the game gives Lancs the moral high ground to complain but they need to be sure that Essex were genuinely culpable and couldn't have done any better. Whatever the truth, it makes nonsense of the bonus points system as neither side had the slightest chance of gaining any batting points on this cart track.

I've long been quite fond of Essex, largely because I have a friend who's a member there and I've watched a lot of cricket at Chelmsford. It's a knowledgable crowd in good numbers, although they can be quite one eyed. But I dare say the same could be said of us lot too! I had a lovely chat there with Robin Hobbs a few years ago which will always be a fond memory.
Their commentators, who I've listened to for many years, seemed just as unhappy with the pitch as people on here and it sounds as though they'll be doing extensive work on the square over the winter.
Great win though, very pleasing to come back from that second innings and great that our youngsters made such a big contributions.
Bit of a mention for Tom Bailey, 49 wickets in what has generally been a season that has favoured batters is a great effort. Hope he gets to 50 against Surrey.

Yes a good season for Bailey. I see Surrey have won the title: be interesting to see them in action next week (if there is any action). We have only won two home games, both against very weak sides (albeit Kent have improved since) and I can't see us doing any better as long as we keep having to play 4-day matches on 5-day pitches at OT.

Umpire's mark pitch after every game and this one must get a poor rating. I don't know what happened "a pitch inspector calls" though.

Re Oldham Exile’s post, I think I may have said elsewhere that I’ve always enjoyed the Essex fans’ company on my several Chelmsford visits . I believe they regularly get the lowest pitch marks from umpires and that together with their complaint over the Taunton pitch in 2019 is what really irks me . I was at that Taunton game and it was a poor pitch but not in my opinion as poor as that Chelmsford one.
