See Lavelle keeping ; Alanw questioned if he was fit the other day Interesting that they think Parkinson and Wood need more overs. Boyden still missing (injured?) otherwise he would surely play ahead of Birkman. Parkinson of course, may not even bowl prior to leaving the game to join the first XI squad in Essex. Playing three spinners but not Hartley..... If Parkinson and Wood are playing at Essex, very strange to have them in the side at Southport even if they leave early.

But would they really rotate Parkinson with Hartley? I would suspect that Parkinson will leave early to join the Essex match squad even if to be 12th Man. Both were in the Surrey match squad. Otherwise it's Parkinson's needed on the OT wickets, but Hartley can do the job on strips which may or may not be prepared to suit Harmer.

Parky and Luke Wood both playing does that mean they are not going to be in the squad for the Somerset game? Mahmood not playing so could be playing at Taunton.

anyone wondering where runs might be coming from almost three centurions in one innings in the current match. Interesting to note that had he reached 100 Hurst would have probably been the quickest of the three but with least boundaries. Don't imagine that Shetty has ever batted at no.11 before, such is 2nd XI cricket, seen as practice for first team squad.

Was thinking about that yesterday Chris ; on the one hand great to see them scoring runs but you do wonder about the quality of opposition and hence usefulness of the cricket.

See JJ Fielding batting for Glamorgan seconds against us though don’t think he batted in first innings. That sort of thing ( I know it’s being going on for a few years ) takes away from the integrity and worth of the game . It also means you’ve got players very much in competition with team mates for contracts rather than playing for a common cause.

Both sides have named a starting 12 which I think they do if the captains agree to it and then each team can make a substitution during the game. However Fielding isn't named in either sides starting 12. There is a note on the scorecard saying that Fielding has replaced Horton who was absent from the Glamorgan first innings. Also Parky has not bowled in the game yet.
I think it would be better and more competitive to play a standard 11 a side four day game.

Bowled them out twice and Parky didn't bowl at all. Injured? If not why name him in the team.

the 12 a side ruling came about because the ECB thought in their wisdom that it would help younger bowlers progress. They believed at the time the change came about that county squads were getting smaller and that 2nd XIs often had young bowlers drafted in on a trial basis - even schoolboys. Young bowlers are restricted in the number of overs that they can bowl in a day and so allowing 12 bowlers to play allowed counties to pick an extra bowler. Of course the system was misused by counties to simply pick 12 (11 to bat and field) based on who they wanted to give match fitness / practice to and / or trial.

Fielding (like Walkden) was told last year that he could talk to other counties. I do not believe he is in Lancashire's plans at all. Overtaken by Hurst and Singh. So it's not really in competition with his mates for a contract at Lancs. Glamorgan probably travelled with 12 players and if Horton was absent for foreseen circumstances (probable 1st XI call up they would have travelled with 13) if it's unforeseen circumstances (family bereavement say) the captains (i.e. the coaches) would be able to allow them a replacement on discretion, I imagine. It was in a losing cause so why not? Why insist that they remain a batsman short? It makes sense at short notice for Glamorgan to allow a local player, who has probably made it known to all counties that he wants a trial, to stand in rather than bring someone up from South Wales.

Agree Chris ; I knew Fielding was way down our list and didn’t mean he was competing for a Lancs contract. I meant as a generality
