Bit of an on off day but Essex’s number three Thain looks an exceptional player to me. Has played every conventional shot in the book and none of the rubbish that has just got Bairstow out in the Test.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Thain in Essex’s first team soon . Looks an absolutely natural number three and you rarely see that . Maybe that’s why Essex felt they could let Lawrence go.
Brown has looked ok but if you didn’t know , you would think that Thain was the one who had played a lot of first team stuff.

Certainly a hard day at the office. Maybe we will get a big score as well. I only saw three overs of Aspinwall but none of our other bowlers impressed me.

Hope you enjoyed your day Des. Shame Morley isn't shining after today's news he could be getting more opportunities but he needs to show a bit more than he did today.

Boyden is returning from an injury so probably best not to judge him yet. But not sure he is a red ball bowler. Will be a very good white ball bowler I feel. Interesting to watch the selection preferences in the younger seamers. Birkman, Vause and Kurtis Watson seem to be the preferred ones and wouldn’t be surprised to see Corey Flintoff and Joe Chapple get a go at some point too. For me though the best two coming through are Louis Johnson (Leigh) and Dominic Hayes (Orrell) but they seem to be well down the pecking order for some reason I cannot fathom. Both lads bowling at serious batters in the Liverpool Comp Premier every week and Hayes has a bit of extra pace too. As for Morley he has some work to do as there are some very good SLA’s coming through in Charlie Barnard and George Taylor. We also have Declan Tyson from Cumbria who is very good too.

Many thanks for your posts leftarmround. Hope you will stay with forum as your knowledge looks really useful to us.
Both Louis Johnson and Dominic Hayes took two economical wickets against Rainford this season. Johnson’s were lower order whereas Hayes were early but I noticed Johnson more. I am just not as good at taking in names of cricketers new to me nowadays ; head too full of 70s cricket, rugby league, rugby union and football results. Will make a point of watching Hayes in return game 22 July.

Echo Des' comments, about welcome to the website. But this made me smile "We also have ....." Dec Tyson has done well for the Lancs u18 development team and I really hope he gets a chance with the full u18 age group team soon. Presumably they play better opposition.
Has played a few games his home county's development team and in the intra-squad match (Millom unlike other nearby towns was never in Lancashire) but his route to the County first team currently blocked by two other SLAs. One is also the opening bat scoring at a strike rate of 177 with a debut BB in the T20 of 4/10 in 4 overs and the other ironically is Lancastrian but is our leading wicket taker. There are also other spinners in view at the same level as Dec including Josh Stirling who Lancs also have had an eye on.

Will probably go tomorrow . The report on Lancs website mentions the century by McKenna as the innings of the day but though it was good, this is my tip for the future. www.essexcricket.org.uk/2023/05/24/noah-thain-signs-rookie-contract/Looked the best bat I’ve seen in any seconds cricket team since Liam Livingstone. Hope he wants to prioritise Test cricket.

Can’t say I learnt a lot from yesterday other than Dickinson certainly looks a good striker of the ball and it was a shame he was run out. Hurst looked a good player ; he’s going to have to be a good bat with our surplus of keepers. Their bowlers had a bit more control than we did conceding 40 fewer runs in 8 more overs.

See Lamb is batting now S&B's Carney is out this morning. Recalled from Gloucestershire to replace Aspinwall and Morley in a 2nds game when those two drafted into the drinks carrying squad for the first team at Worcester?
