Very poor captaincy to bring back Mitchell & co knowing that Surrey would go on the slog. Lancs now getting demoralised.

I don't what it says about Lancs but apparently they have lost the Lancs Flag....so only Surrey's flag and county championship flags are flying at the Oval. Lanc's flag has been missing all season.....

More than just a (metaphorical) flag that's been missing, MITS! Conceding a substantial lead to a side that was 50 behind with one wicket left looks really bad but tbh we only had them 9 down because of their own overconfidence and not because of our superior play. You could say that the balance has now been restored. What I don't understand is why we thought that the seam attack we chose for an away game against a side that had already won 5 out of 7 was remotely adequate. Worse, I can't think of anyone who should have played instead, apart from perhaps Luke Wood.

Forecast for the next two days at The Oval is cloudy but dry so a bit might be lost to bad light but I can't see anything coming out of this game but a heavy defeat for Lancs. We are effectively 27 for 4 and to have any chance of avoiding defeat we need to bat until lunch on Wednesday, which we aren't going to do. Jennings is clearly rusty so it was no surprise that he nicked off. Wells and Bohannon, having seen off the new ball, both gave it away. Vilas looked all at sea and obviously wasn't going to survive for long.
The chief differences between the two sides are that (a) Surrey have an experienced and very varied 4/5 man seam attack which can keep up the pressure for long spells and wear the batters down, whereas Lancs have two very good seamers, two part-timers and a rookie and (b) Surrey look like a side that is at the top of its game whereas Lancs don't always seem to know what to do in the field, as shown by their farcical attempts to take the 10th wicket, and don't have enough patience and determination when batting against bowlers who don't give much away.
The worst thing about today was the way we handed the advantage back to Surrey after being gifted a string of wickets.

Just about even at the end of the first day but we'll need early wickets tomorrow to have any chance of forcing a win. Well I hope you are happy now offering Surrey hope, 99% of neutrals would have said with Surrey's best four batsmen already in the shed and Surrey still 204 runs behind Lancashire were well on top.

Didn't get to see much today except Surreys tail enders knocking 7 colours out of our bowling attack. A far cry from the beginning of last season when we had Anderson, Mahmood, Hasan, Wood, Bailey, Parky....

Well they would have been wrong, as subsequent events showed and I'm not at all happy that it's 95% likely that we are going to come out of this match with just 3 points and all hope of catching Surrey completely gone. Instead of building on two really good seasons in the CC, we have gone backwards and relegation, although unlikely, is not out of the question.

The Surrey team is very strong from 1-11. It's very rare that a team in the championship can field a 5 strong seam attack without a weak link, and without weakening the batting line up. Tom Lawes is one of the least known of their players but he is a very good all round cricketer. Sharp pace, accurate, clever beyond his years, will end up batting at 8, if not 7. Their tail is just silly long, remind me of the Northampton team from around 2011 when they had 11 centurions.
So, it was really frustrating to get them 10 down and lose the advantage. I suspect Luke Wood is being rested for the "crucial" T20 fixtures to come. Perhaps Rob Jones is a better option than Dane Vilas at this stage in their respective careers?
And a quick shout out for Phil Salt. Hasn't been with us that long, we're probably not going to see that much of him due to his white ball prowess (for others!) but fair play, he turns out for us whenever he can and gives his all with no little skill.
