Off already thanks to rain. Very grey skies. Yes, unfortunately forecast for the next few days NOT good either! Must put in doubt the win we so desperately require. At least we have two knowledgeable cricket commentators for LancsTV/BBC sport for this match, namely Dick Davies of Essex and Callum Flynn for us. The Essex commentator isn't that knowledgeable. Early doors this morning the chat turned to the Ashes series and he said - yes, the series is evenly poised at 1-1, which planet has he been on this last few weeks?

Yes John, I heard that surprising gaffe myself........... However, what was more surprising was the fact that our man, Scott Read, failed to correct him!

Very disappointing if Balderson has been dropped in favour of CDG. George has out performed CDG this season and is clearly part of the future of Lancashire CCC in a way that I sincerely hope CDG is not. It's a like for like replacement. I would have batted GB at four in the current team after his batting performances against Notts, Somerset and Hampshire. I suspect there is a reluctance to leave the overseas signing out. I think you're probably right Alan, my only hesitation was that Baldy might have a niggle. But it does feel like we've paid for an overseas so by God, we're going to play him! I doubt CDG has become a poor player overnight but it's been a very disappointing contribution so far.

Essex 12 for 1 vs Lancashire
The first day of Lancashire's match with second-placed Essex in the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Blackpool was badly affected by the weather with just 28 balls possible in which time Essex made 12 for one.
Both teams came into the fixture with enforced changes, Essex opener Feroze Khushi having sustained a sore hand last week in the Vitality Blast while Lancashire rested Daryl Mitchell to help the overseas all-rounder manage a groin issue.
The day was split into two short tranches of play that book-ended this unusual day.
After a misleadingly sunny morning, Essex won the toss and elected to bat under increasingly gloomy skies, a mood probably shared by Nick Browne after he edged the fourth delivery of the day from Tom Bailey to Colin de Grandhomme at third slip without a run on the board.
In the 25 balls bowled in the morning there was time for Alastair Cook to punch a four off the back foot from Will Williams and Essex skipper Tom Westley to glance Bailey to fine leg for four off the first ball of the fifth over.
At that point the rain arrived to take the players from the field for more than six hours, and it was a testament to the Blackpool club that their outfield, re-laid three years ago, coped admirably with the deluge that fell during the day.
That allowed umpires Peter Hartley and Steve O'Shaughnessy to restart play at 5.30pm following several inspections, but only three balls had been bowled in Bailey's interrupted over before bad light halted play once again, with more rain minutes later ending a very frustrating day.
Cook (4 not out) and Westley (8 not out) will resume the Essex first innings tomorrow.

At home watching this on youtube today as I can't get to work as our main road out of town is closed due to the massive rain here in Vermont. Devastation all over the state. Similar to what I saw with hurricane Irene in 2011. Luckily, I live on a hill and way up from the river. Its stopped now and we should get 2 days of dry before the next rain which isn't supposed to be as much. We've gotten something like 7-8" Sunday-Monday.

As has happened in previous games, Lancs get a team on the ropes and then allow them to rebuild.

This has happened in match after match and for the same reason: our back-up bowling lacks penetration. Hartley is a container at best and Blatherwick is hit and miss. De Grandhomme is tidy but only takes wickets when the batters make mistakes. Don't know why Wood isn't playing - he can be expensive but is fast and offers something different on a flat pitch like the one we are playing on. Lancs knew before the season began that, if Mahmood got injured, we would struggle for wickets on flat pitches once the new ball had worn off but they did nothing about it.

3 quick wickets but need to get the last 2 out cheaply quickly to make this interesting after the lack of play yesterday. Still looking like a draw.
