Left at 5.15 so my departure hastens a fall of wickets, good morning, Cook could have gone twice before he did get out, Lawrence will never get out like that again, Westley and Walter batted well and to be honest we really did lack ideas for the majority of the afternoon, good catch by Blathers but Harmer looked at ease until after I'd gone

37 for 1 at stumps. Wells a bit careless - didn't withdraw the bat in time - but Bohannon and Jennings didn't look in much trouble once Porter came off. Can't see how we can manufacture a win from here so need to go for as many batting points as we can get. Surrey and Hampshire don't look like winning but Warwickshire do.

It's not just variety that is lacking in our attack but quality. We have great new ball bowlers and then nothing. Our only seamer with the pace to take wickets with the old ball doesn't get a game and we have got rid of our only wicket-taking spinner.

Indeed, Luke Wood was in the squad for this match, I'm surprised he isn't playing! Coming on after 15/20 overs not only would he give that extra pace but also the added variety of a Left Hander. |

It's a very strange case with Wood. I was told he is now concentrating on white ball cricket but at Southport and Blackpool he was out on the pitch bowling both before play and at lunch. As usual with Lancs you don't hear a thing. If there is a full day at Blackpool tomorrow (a big if I know) which way do both teams play it? The forecast for the Oval isn't too bad tomorrow and fine for Thursday so if Surrey take early wickets they are firmly on course to win. A draw for Essex and Lancs is no good if this happens so, Lancs to go for 450 and the game drifts towards a draw or the unthinkable, Lancs pull out early and put the onus on Essex to set a target? I'd love to see Chapple's face if the latter happened! |
