A comfortable 76 for 1 to 116 for 7 so still 17 required to avoid the follow-on.
Looks like more rain required to preserve our unbeaten CC record.
Vilas run out after facing just two balls. Was it an unlucky run out, or a stupid one?

Does the forum have an ‘edit’ feature; could have changed it to 116 for 8.

Stupid run out. I only saw after Jennings was out , but except for Salt so far who has looked good, no one escapes blame . Even Bohannon gave no impression of permanence.

It was a stupid run-out - absolutely suicidal - but came from Vilas's anxiety about his lack of form. He really shouldn't be playing but, for Chapple, loyalty always trumps cricketing considerations. A disastrous morning - Essex aren't the first to work out that Jennings can be undermined by the keeper standing up to a seam bowler and they won't be the last. Another flop for Jones, playing a sort of non-shot. Bohannon didn't seem to realise that Essex had posted a leg slip for exactly the shot that got him out. Another non-contribution from De Grandhomme - looked a bit high to me but he was far too late with the shot. Walter was just too good for Hartley and Blatherwick. Not easy batting conditions but the chief difference between us and Essex is that they have five good bowlers and we only have two. Good forecast for tomorrow so we'd better hope that Williams and Bailey can hold up an end while Salt bashes a few.

Aye, now playing to survive for a draw rather than wondering if there was any possibility of even attempting to try and win after a rainy first day and then Essex batting for nearly all of yesterday. We're actually weak on both sides of the ball, only 2 quality playing and really poor at batting. Hope Salt can at least keep his good looking champo form even if they fall at the other end.

That should say "bowlers playing".

Wasn't Essex at home our only defeat last year in the CC? And then we beat them at their place on that dodgy pitch that backfired on them when we skittled them when they only needed 90 odd to win.

Bailey strikes early. Looks windy there.

Bailed out when it rained a blowy cold day by the seaside dire batting performance except for Salt who is a quality player. Virtully pitch dark when they batted again which may explain why Browne left the ball

So here we are again: early wickets from Williams and Bailey, after which Essex tuck in to our substandard back-up bowling. It's now pretty good odds on an Essex win tomorrow.

Without a doubt this has been a shocker of a day for the Red Rose
