What a shambles! Obviously, we're not going to chase 430. The only glimmer of hope is that Essex didn't declare so they must think the pitch has flattened out a bit. What on earth were we doing, choosing to field a weak team against one of the best sides in the division? Awful batting and (except for Bailey and Wiliams) awful bowling.

Brutal indeed, but haven’t Essex missed a trick?
There isn’t even enough time to score 430 runs in 96 overs (surely an overnight declaration to come).
Too many of our players are out of form, can’t see us batting all day to save it. Maybe Essex are quite confident they’ll remove us in 50 overs.

Yes, they'd probably have had us two down by stumps but maybe, after the way we batted this morning, they think there's more than enough time. Hopefully , this will be the end of thinking that Tom Hartley can replace Parkinson (who took 5 wickets for Durham) in 4 day cricket. Still don't understand why we didn't sign a good 1st change seamer or why Stephen Croft and Luke Wood weren't selected for this game.

or why Stephen Croft and Luke Wood weren't selected for this game. ………………or maybe Balderson and Bell instead of De Grandhomme and Jones.

Is it hopefully going to rain tomorrow? Disappointing if we lose to Essex after turning over Surrey on their own midden the other week.

Surprised Essex didn't declare and put us in...... I thought they batted on far too long, even after Lawrence got a ton. 350 would have been comfortably enough, just hope we finish 9 down tomorrow!

Is it the pitch or the kookabora ball, which has consistently got wickets only at the start of each innnings. Helped us blow away Surrey's top order also.

My most depressing day watching Lancs this season. Breezy Blackpool was bloody freezing Blackpool except for the last couple of hours when the sun made a welcome appearance. Batting, numbers 3,4 and 5 got themselves out all in different circumstances, leading to a bizarre collapse. Only a small thing but Bailey who in the last match was deemed good enough to bat at number 8 against Surrey's all star attack only came in at number 11 today? Bowling, as others have commented, when you take away Bailey and Williams you are left with Minor Counties bowlers, every other county know this so most of those counties get into early trouble then ease out of it once Bailey and Williams are through their spell. Fielding, overthrows given away, a real flatness and lack of any intensity, it was almost like the final game in September with nothing at stake for us. Catches, Salt spilt a tough leg side chance when Lawrence was on 31, like all good batters do he made us pay, Blatherwick dropped an absolute dolly the over after he had been savaged for 20 odd, maybe he had other things on his mind? I thought Essex might declare and have a stab at us this evening, they are obviously pretty confident that after our first innings capitulation Cook, Porter, Harmer and co will complete the job tomorrow.
Fear not though, there could yet be a cunning plan from our dynamic duo Messrs Chil & Chap regarding recruiting a fast bowler to solve our problems...I spotted Liam Hurt in the home dressing room this afternoon!

So here we are again: early wickets from Williams and Bailey, after which Essex tuck in to our substandard back-up bowling. I've just been having a look back at last season, as regards the back-up bowling. In the first six games we were able to rotate the seamers. Bailey and Hassan played in five of them, Wood and Anderson in four, and Mahmood just the one before injury. So in game one, it was Bailey, Hassan and Wood, game two Hassan, Anderson and Mahmood, game three, Bailey, Hassan and Anderson (same in game five), game four Bailey, Hassan and Wood and game six Bailey, Hassan, Wood and Anderson. Balderson played in all six and Lamb in three. Point being when the first two had had their opening spell, fair to say it was a better class of bowler coming on as first change compared with today; probably a better second change as well. Importantly, Parkinson weighed in with 24 wickets in those opening six games. After those six we didn't see Mahmood and Anderson again and Wood only played in four more, but by then Williams had arrived and he and Bailey played in all the remaining games, taking 74 wickets between them from that point. This time around Mahmood is finished for the season, maybe Anderson also and Wood isn't being selected. The spinning duties are being fulfilled by Hartley, who's not yet reached double figures in wickets. A mention of Vilas: maybe the coach/captain reckoned he was in fact finding some form again. He scored 48 runs in the Surrey game and 70, for once out, against Hampshire so in that respect I can understand his selection. Maybe Wells, with just 62 runs in his last six visits to the middle, should be considered under threat. Jones? Three scores between 11 and 18 since he was brought back into the side, (and used very "strangely" in the T20 team). Surely Bell or Balderson would have done better. The problem is that Jones first played in 2016 so this is his 8th season and he's never been able to hold down a regular slot. We let Hameed go after three successive poor seasons, how many more is Jones to be afforded?

Wow, yeah look at our bowling compared to last season. This isn't just down to Mahmood. We also had Washington for a short spell late on.

Definitely agree that something isn't right, you can sense it more when you are closer to the action like Blackpool (also possibly a reaction after they missed out on T20 Final's Day?). I'm there again today putting myself through the pleasure and pain. I've only put one set of butties up, I fully expect to be home by tea!

Re: Bailey batting at 11 didn't he hurt his hand taking a catch in Essex's first innings.
