Just read of a further reduction to six matches. Rumour or truth, anyone know? Surely if a contract was signed they can't keep changing it?

I think what I read was an assumption that this game would count as a game as he was selected in the squad even if it was abandoned and thus Lancs would only get 6 games (plus the Surrey match). CA might have stipulated that he was not even in the squad for the two matches that he was not available.

If the forecast is poor for this game, and we have already lost a day, he should be left out of this game.

Are Lancashire clever enough to use his 7 games wisely?

Are Lancashire clever enough to use his 7 games wisely? I would be looking at resting him for the current game with day one already lost, probably a delayed start today and a mixed forecast for the remaining two days.

Once Lyon is done Lancs would be able to bring in another overseas player, correct? Didn't Washington come in mid way through the season a couple of years back?

We could sign another overseas player anytime, you can have four on your books but only play two. Case in point Vilas, Mitchell and De Grandholme last year. But assuming the original comment was maybe to do with budget etc then I would assume that as CA are cutting Lyon’s stunt with us shirt, so the salary he would have made for the second half of the season is freed up for someone. That I can see, India have the T20 WC in June then mainly white-ball games in the July to September period with a couple of home tests against Bangladesh in September. They’re touring England next year so perhaps someone on the fringes of the test squad, who isn’t involved in limited overs stuff at international level, would be free to join us for the June to September period to get some experience of English conditions.

Are Lancashire clever enough to use his 7 games wisely? Well it's been a great move selecting him for the current game! They could play him in the first seven games so that he misses the two games in June when Tom Hartley might be away on white ball duty with England.

I agree! The world and his wife knew the weather forecast for Old Trafford. The ground staff knew that the water levels were so high that it wouldn't take much rain to tip it over the edge. The coaching team knew that Lyon was now going to miss 2 games. Everything pointed to letting him ride this one out to save him for when he can have a big impact. When this game eventually dies a death sometime tomorrow and Scott Read is interviewing whoever is put up by Lancashire (Benkenstein?), I hope the question is asked - what was the thought process behind selecting your overseas spinner in a heavily truncated game when the coaching team are aware that somewhere along the line he will have to miss 2 games? Surely a responsible, professional team would have come to the conclusion that it would be better to save him. It smacks of the current Lyon love-in that is engulfing the club, yes he is a great spinner but a great spinner won't win you a match sat in the dressing room when he has used up all his permitted allocation of games.

If that question doesn't get anywhere, I'd suggest, as a follow up, asking has the club any say over which games he plays or have CA already said: miss game 3 in April and game 5 in May, for example, or any stipulation at all? Afterall the ECB decide which matches rather than the number of matches that their players are available to play? Just because Lancashire have announced 7 from 9 doesn't mean they don't think they are being clever and cagey by not announcing which the two are - or even that they are pre-determined.

Scott Read won't be asking any tricky questions. Correct! Safe hands Scott doesn't want to disturb his cosy little job.
