The bowling by both sides was not as bad as scores might indicate ; easy wicket, good atmospheric conditions good batting and some short boundaries probably meant whoever batted second would win. Andrew Pickavance, Rainford’s opening bowler whose 16 overs went for 97 said he would bowl worse and take a five fer.

Already on 99 so should be looking good then. I seem to remember last season Rainford getting 2 draws or no results against Colwyn bay who went down, but I could be mistaken. I think it was because of the weather, so hopefully the weather holds up when they play the poorer teams.

Unlucky Rainford.

I’m not sure whether Northern would have recovered from another Rainford win against the odds to follow last season’s amazing Cup final win there. When Jason Login’s leg spin took two wickets at the end of the penultimate over making it 200 for 8, I really thought Rainford would win it although I knew James Cole, Northern’s captain and keeper who is a winner through and through would only be interested in a win.

In a match that to everyone , even James Cole, looked unlikely to take place at the start time when a flock of starlings were bathing in the pools of water on the covers , it was always likely the toss would confer a big advantage both in the green conditions in which Rainford started and in the shortage of time Rainford had to put a high enough score that would give them a chance of winning by the run rate pressure that Northern would be under. Indeed had Rainford elected to use their remaining overs to obtain another bonus point, it would have almost certainly been drawn.

Rainford’s defence of the total started on the wrong note, with Andrew Pickavance , who bowled so magnificently in the final last year, starting off with several short deliveries, which went for fours or sixes. The game had more of a feel of a limited over game albeit that you suspected that Rainford’s only chance of not losing was to bowl Northern out. Liam Gray’s magnificent century had Northern cruising until he was brilliantly caught by Andy Davies on the boundary.

The crucial delivery was probably the first ball of the last over when James Cole swung and Paul Farrell, who is always an excellent catcher, failed to pick up the ball with the sun and the trees and it went by his left shoulder for six. Had that been caught, I would have backed John Dotters to have dismissed Tom Sephfton with five balls at him . Credit to James Cole, however who swung the fourth ball out of the ground .

After such a fine match it was somewhat rich of a prominent Northern player to moan about Rainford keeping them in the field for 50 overs. Ah bless the entitled rich ; as John Dotters said “ Did you expect us to declare after forty and just roll over for you”? The result suggests to me that the declaration was just about perfect.
