According to the preview on the Lancs website Jimmy is going to play in the next four championship games. That's good to hear. 2nd XI game is a four dayer so Mahmood won't be available. I see that Parky and Wood are also playing in that game... Last season we lost at home but won there managing to bowl Essex out despite them only needing 98 runs to win with Balderson taking a hat trick..

Parky misses out despite his Michelle in the opener, Luke Wood also drops out. As trailed the great man returns to the squad: Keaton Jennings (c), James Anderson, Tom Bailey, George Balderson, George Bell, Josh Bohannon, Steven Croft, Colin De Grandhomme, Tom Hartley, Rob Jones, Dane Vilas, Luke Wells, Will Williams

Makes sense to have Balderson and Hartley rather than Wood and Parkinson for this particular fixture. Balderson probably won't repeat his heroics of last year but he is more reliable with the bat than Wood and Hartley is a good swap for Parkinson on a normal Chelmsford pitch. I would expect De Grandhomme and Jones to be the two to miss out, unless the pitch is a shirtfront.

I'd be surprised if De Grandhomme was dropped...more likely Hartley and Jones IMHO... Forecast fair for tomorrow but poor for Friday...

I wouldn't use the word "dropped" in this context, MITS - more a matter of horses for courses. Also it's difficult to see why Hartley would replace Parkinson in the squad if he's not going to play: presumably Chapple thinks that Hartley is the closest match we have to Harmer.

And you were right. I was right about Hartley, though, so we're even...
Wells out cheaply, allegedly strangled but he thinks he was sawn off. Can anyone explain to me why batsmen habitually flick at balls going down legside? Mostly they just miss but it doesn't seem worth the risk, especially at the top of the innings.

Flicking at the ball down the leg side is a natural thing or in my case getting my backside out of the way, Jennings also not impressed with decision
