It may be natural but (if I understand it correctly) batting is about suppressing what is natural e.g. hitting across the line is "natural" but batters learn to play straight. Jennings psyched out yet again: played an enormously risky shot to try to get Rossington to back off. Too early in the season for this sort of stuff. Edit: now Croft has gone, throwing the kitchen sink at a wide one without getting to the pitch of the ball. Did we learn nothing from the last game?

4 down now, another short game at Chelmsford?

All four wickets thrown away by over-aggression: Wells may possibly have got a bad decision but didn't need to play that shot; Jennings suckered by Rossington standing up; Croft and Bohannon both throwing the bat without any footwork.

Does anybody know why the Lancashire players are wearing black arm bands?

Well we might match last season’s score, which ended up being a winning one.

Better than it might have been but around 300 looks a good score on this pitch so we're well short. Credit to Bell and Hartley and also to some good Essex bowling but four give-aways + Bailey's dozy run-out mean that we'll have to bowl out of our skins unless Essex are equally careless.

Five penalty runs De Grandhomme throwing ball back at Critchley

Bowled well enough and it was looking good at 25 for 3 but, unlike Lancs, Essex didn't get themselves out so now we're in trouble. The five penalty runs looked a bit harsh but summed up De Grandhomme's day: skittled for 2 and bowled tidily but without ever looking like taking a wicket. Lancs are good at coming back so tomorrow may be better.

Five penalty runs De Grandhomme throwing ball back at Critchley Really?
National Counties have been told:
"Throwing the ball at Batters:
I have spoken to most of the Head Coaches about the new guidance that has been given to the umpires ahead of this season. Having attended the umpire’s seminar a few weeks ago, the message delivered was very clear, if a bowler fielding the ball off their own bowling, throws the ball back at the stumps (at the batter’s end), when the batter isn’t looking to run, it will be deemed inappropriate and dangerous.
The result of this will be an on-field Level 2 – this carries a 2 match ban."
