"Throwing the ball at Batters:
I have spoken to most of the Head Coaches about the new guidance that has been given to the umpires ahead of this season. Having attended the umpire’s seminar a few weeks ago, the message delivered was very clear, if a bowler fielding the ball off their own bowling, throws the ball back at the stumps (at the batter’s end), when the batter isn’t looking to run, it will be deemed inappropriate and dangerous.
The result of this will be an on-field Level 2 – this carries a 2 match ban."

When I said that I thought the award of 5 penalty runs was a bit harsh, I wasn't aware of this new ruling, of which De Grandhomme was clearly in breach. He didn't throw the ball particularly hard and he threw it at the stumps, not at Critchley. However, the ruling is clear and he only has himself to blame if he incurs a two match penalty.

A good comeback, the two drops in the slips notwithstanding, but it's a pity we didn't bat better as we'd now be looking at a match-winning lead (assuming the weather doesn't wreck things). The pitch looks as though batting last will be extremely difficult - 20 byes so far, nearly all caused by the ball rearing up from a length and then deviating down legside.

I was surprised to read this morning that the revised points system features eight points to each side for a game where there is no play at all over four days.
If the Essex game fell victim to the weather from this point onwards, we would collect one point less than we would have done for a total abandonment.

No, they almost certainly won't be back out tonight. Very bad luck for Lancs having to come off when well on top of the bowling and unlikely to be much play tomorrow. Sunday looks OK so we might be able to set a total. Not a good day for Luke Wells - a real dolly drop of Critchley and failed again with the bat.

This system strongly favours the weaker sides in the division but it's not obvious what to do about it. Perhaps it would be fairer not to award points for unplayed matches until the end of the season, at which point each side would be awarded its average points score. This system could also be used for all matches abandoned before both sides have completed their first innings.
Prospects of play today have improved but, with intermediate "thundery showers" promised, there could be quite a few substantial breaks in play. |

Despite no play the cameras are still broadcasting and it looks like we might get some play pre-lunch....
Early lunch and match will restart at 1.10pm
Further info - 2 sessions of 40 overs..so 16 overs lost..

Bohannon just seemed to play down the wrong line. Croft shouldn't be batting at 3. Vilas lost patience (again) and played a T20 shot. Excellent knock by Jennings and good, sensible support from Bell. Get to tea without losing any more and we could be in with a sniff.
