John, Des,
I agree the role that Chilton sets the overall landscape, scene, culture, whatever for the cricket at Lancs.
Just don't believe that includes team selection. It does include contracts.
Defended him in this instance when singled out as saying one thing in July and doing another in September.
Probably also, but this is a guess. I can't see Allott or Chapple or others going back further, or Gidney standing up and saying they chose the wrong words or whatever. Admitting mistakes is not their way. Chilton is the first person, I can remember who has admitted an error. That, historically is not the Lancashire way. It may be a first step but he needs to takes responsibility when others don't and the old culture remains unchanged. But is that culture his or Gidney's remit?
I wasn't at the forum. Didn't suggest Crowe was responsible either only that if Chapple consults with anyone over select it would be his assistant. Chilton resigning is unlikely to improve the on field performance, not short term anyway. Chapple's might. For years we have been producing young players who perform at every level up to and until the first team. Why? That needs to change. The coach needs to change and not be protected as he took 1000 wickets and most of the members saw more than half of the 1000.
Can't imagine what the dressing room will be like if Lamb or Jones play ahead of Boyden or Lavelle. There are clearly lots of problems at the club at the moment, but will they be sorted by blaming Chilton for selection or not retreating from even his own position / statement that clearly was rubbish?
Enjoy the day, I'll be at the Higson Final at Haverigg. Far happier with my adopted county.

Bizarre squad. There is something seriously wrong at the club.

Good post Chris . Well expressed even though we differ on the point. It’s good to be able to have a discussion online where you have civilised disagreement . Online can so easily polarise people who you know would get on face to face.
Great how you feel at Cumbria . Who is in the final today? Hope it’s a really good day.

Oh dear, we've won the toss. I fear the worst. Presumably by playing Hartley in place of Morley, and bowling first we don't think it's going to turn. Hot weather down there, though, so time will tell.
What's the point in Vilas playing? Should have played Balderson at no.4 and brought Hurst in. Jones & Lamb not playing. What was the point of naming them in the squad?.

Lots of lbw shouts but not much else. Decent fielding by Vilas for the run out after a mix up by the batters having hit to the short boundary.

Blatherwick gets one to bounce and a catch at slip. 3 down.

I think Vilas has been picked for sentimental reasons, with the experience of Jennings, Wells, Bohannon and Salt one of the youngsters could have been included. Alternatively we could have used Balderson as a specialist batsmen and played Boyden. Also it seems strange to me that Morley wasn't included in the squad.

Overall a decent enough day, although a shame to lose Jennings near the end.
61 from Williams would go down well!
If Vilas is being picked for sentimental reasons, perhaps we could do the same with Croft next game.

Thanks, Des Cockermouth won it for the first time - cup donated in 1923 by Thomas Higson senior (ex-Lancashire player as league formerly known as the North Lancashire and District Cricket League) - beating Furness who have won it loads. Everyone pretty happy! Not that I watch a great deal of club cricket, the County set up keeps me busy.

If we all agreed then the world and forums like this would be a very boring place. It's good that someone has the right of reply and it is taken with good grace unlike some social media groups. I'm still wondering why we won the toss and inserted. Somehow Lancs got the wickets for below 250 which should be the case when you put the opposition in, but Northants contributed massively to their own downfall. I think they will still feel they are in the contest with Sanderson and White giving it a big push in the morning, a crucial first hour beckons.

Lancashire 54 for 2 trail Northamptonshire 323 (Whiteman 79) by 178 runs
Sam Whiteman passed fifty for the fourth time in Championship cricket this season but self-inflicted wounds meant Northamptonshire again failed to raise a batting point on day one of their game with Lancashire at Wantage Road.
In his last game this season for the Steelbacks before returning to Western Australia, Whiteman proved the mainstay of the home side's total of 232, hitting 79 with a six and 12 fours after they lost the toss and were put in.
A lapse of concentration cost him the chance of a third hundred of the campaign and other careless shots and two farcical run-outs meant their batting bonus point total for the season remains stuck on three. Wickets were shared around, Tom Hartley, George Balderson and Will Williams claiming two apiece.
Northamptonshire though struck back with the ball, Lancashire losing openers Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings both lbw to Ben Sanderson and Jack White respectively, Jennings looking aggrieved over a dismissal which looked high and sliding down leg-side. Nightwatchman Williams was dropped at second slip by Gay in the final over as the visitors closed on 54 for 2, 178 runs in arears.
Whiteman was at the crease early, opener Hassan Azad having been pinned lbw playing no shot during a probing opening spell from Tom Bailey.
As with any batter faced with a 10.30am start, the left-hander needed his share of good fortune, inside edging on numerous occasions, three times seeing the ball bounce over the stumps. However, two fours in one over from Williams got him up and running before an almost head high no-ball from Jack Blatherwick was despatched over the short boundary into the West Stand.
These shows of aggression were the exception where he was concerned, any fluency there was coming from Emilio Gay. The young opener, who endured a poor Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign, was looking to recapture the form which saw him make 144 and 61 against the Red Roses in the reverse fixture back in July.
Save for an early vociferous lbw shout from Bailey the signs were good, the left-hander creaming several dreamy drives through the extra-cover mid-off region in moving elegantly to 35. However, with lunch approaching, confusion over a second run saw Gay sent back by Whiteman with no hope of making his ground thanks to Dane Vilas's arrow-like throw from the deep.
To rub salt in Northamptonshire wounds, skipper Luke Procter was also out prior to the adjournment, Blatherwick getting one to lift from not far short of a length, the ball taking the glove and flying head high to Williams at third slip.
Whatever Whiteman had for lunch he emerged from the dressing-room with more intent, sending three deliveries from one Blatherwick over to the fence as he moved to 50 in 71 balls. Soon afterwards the bowler was forced from the field with a niggle.
Keogh kept Whiteman company through the early afternoon, without finding any real fluency, before inside edging one from Williams into his off stump.
The injury to Blatherwick forced Lancashire skipper Jennings to turn to the spin of Hartley and he would prove the undoing of Whiteman, who, in a loss of concentration played across a straight one and was adjudged lbw.
The loss of their anchor proved the cue for a slump, Saif Zaib who had played nicely to that point, driving lazily at Balderson to lose his off stump, the bowler then accounting for Justin Broad caught behind by Phil Salt, the batter somewhat surprised to be given out.
The second comical run-out of the day accounted for Tom Taylor and despite some late hitting from wicketkeeper Lewis McManus and Jack White, the hosts came up short in their quest for a first batting point at Wantage Road this season.
