Des, I wouldn't go so far as to suggest that Lancs have lacked professionalism in this match, even if motivation has been lacking at the subconscious level (an inevitable consequence of the CC structure). Some of our batting was a bit demob happy but the bowlers stuck at it conscientiously enough. Most of our problems have stemmed from making the wrong decision at the toss but it was a decision supported in advance by many commentators. The conventional wisdom was that the pitch would develop into a bunsen. Maybe it yet will but there's been little sign of it so far and, having survived the new ball, the Kent batters had it pretty easy yesterday and the bowlers were tired when the second new ball came along. I think we might do a bit better this morning.
Sadly, I think you're absolutely right about the inability of the club to deal with players who don't toe the line - there have been a lot over the years - but I do hope you're wrong about Lancs being a microcosm for the country!
We have seen the best of our time. Machinations, hollowness, treachery and all ruinous disorders follow us disquietly to our graves.

You could say that about more than one politician, Des, across all the major parties.
I'm sure he's a nice lad and trying his best, but this is a professional sport, and Blatherwick, is, quite frankly, an embarrassment. Not the first time this season he's been taken off for bowling beamers, not to mention all the front foot no-balls. Don't know what the club see in him.
I completely agree that you shouldn't be able to pick and choose whether you play your nominated substitute.

If Blatherwick was rejected by Nottinghamshire, what made our hierarchy think he would be any good with us?

Yeah, at already in his mid twenties if Blatherwick still seems raw then you'd think he won't be making it at a top county. He doesn't seem good enough to be in that 2nd tier of player that the likes of Surrey have, you know not international quality but that step below that you need to win county championships.

If Blatherwick was rejected by Nottinghamshire, what made our hierarchy think he would be any good with us? I think he's shown a lot of promise and tbf, Notts rejected Luke Wood too. But bowling beamers isn't a great look for an experienced bowler.

Earlier on the stream I saw someone wearing a Jennings shirt bowling a head high full toss, turned out to be our international spinner, Tom Hartley. You've got to laugh.

I can't believe Kent meant to prepare such a flat track, strikes me as very risky given their position in the table. It's unlikely we'll get as tight a finish to the relegation battle as last year but who knows?

I think those were wickets 49 and 50 for Bailey, so well done to him.
We’ve made a steady start reducing the substantial deficit.

Unless they collapse like Essex just have done, should spend the rest of the match as batting practice.

For some reason my stream was way back from where it should be. Don't know if I pressed pause for a while or something. Excellent start by these 2.

point just made on commentary, the deficit cleared apart from the 55 extras (including the 28 for no-balls)

According to Scott Read that's the fourth time in five years that Bailey has taken 50 wickets, quite an achievement.

55 extras with 28 no balls sounds poor...who are the guilty parties?

55 extras with 28 no balls sounds poor...who are the guilty parties? No Balls: Bailey 3, Williams 2, Blatherwick 4, Balderson 4, Hartley 1 = 28 runs
4 byes:
Williams 2, Morley 2 = 16 runs
one of Williams 4b was also a no-ball. one of Bailey's NBs was caught although Quinn was out two balls later in the same over for the same score
rest were leg byes
I remember watching the Lancs bowlers warm up at Sedbergh School from side on practically every ball was a no-ball, ok it's only a warm up, but doesn't it create bad habits?
