It feels like Lancs needed a change. Don't know enough about behind the scenes, but it seems Chilton should go too seeing how things are run and by what the general opinion seems to be of him on here.

“what's Tom Smith doing these days? Still coaching at Leicester? Isn't he at Yorkshire of all places? I'm sure he was not too long ago.” Yorkshire second team coach. Saw him at seconds game at Southport recently

Sad news for me though most coaches/managers' careers end this way. Depressing to read on here the revelling in the sacking and calling for more of them...

Strange timing. You would have expected this to be announced a few weeks ago when the players contracts were being sorted out. Suggests Chapple unimpressed with recruitment(or lack of) for next season. Not his greatest fan but this season's regression more down to Chilton IMHO. CDG recruitment looked poor at the time and so it proved and we've been left with ridiculously poor bowling options for the championship run in.
Onions took charge of the 50-over side so would be the obvious choice, but he's been the bowling coach to a side who managed to bowl 14 no-balls between them in Kent's innings.
Outside appointments aren't always better. Yes, we won the championship under Moores but other factors contributed to that and he got us relegated the following season. Giles was poor.
Tom Smith might be the compromise appointment. A Lancs man but away from the team long enough to bring a fresh outlook.

I think its time for a change. There has been some poor management of the first XI this year.
*The departure of Parky and the events leading up to it. *Appointment of Livingstone as T20 captain. *Strange selection decisions playing CGD ahead of Balderson in the Essex game at Blackpool and Luke Wood only playing two red ball games spring to mind.
Time for some new ideas and maybe a different culture in the dressing room. I would be in favour of bringing somebody in from outside unless we already have a natural leader in the camp.

Hardly revelling, just the majority would see it as the right decision given the regression this season, the lack of silverware for too long and as others have stated some of the decision making across the board which inevitably must include Chilton's input too.Time for a fresh start and sorting out of an allegedly fractured dressing room.

Absolutely the right decision. Lancs have fallen back badly this season, which suggests that a change of approach is needed. Unfortunately, it's a racing certainty that it will be an internal appointment with everyone in the coaching hierarchy moving up one rung. The problem lies deep within the club's culture, where knowing your place, deference to your betters and keeping your mouth shut are valued far above success on the field. It won't be solved by appointing an outsider because the club won't accept that anything needs to change and outsiders soon become disillusioned.

Lancashire are absolutely crying out for outside influence and ideas. I could understand a Liverpool bootroom-style promotion if we were a winning team with an upwards trajectory. We are not. From the overseas signings, through team selection, through the departures of Matt Parkinson and Rob Jones, this is a dysfunctional set up. If it's an internal, or "Lancashire", appointment we'll just get more of the same sh1t. New broom please.
As a post script, I will absolutely love and adore Glen Chapple the player until my dying day but even his staunchest support has to admit it hasn't worked out with him as coach.

I’m not revelling in it and do have a certain sadness about the departure of one of my favourite ever Lancashire players. I never thought he was the right choice as head coach but do wish him well. However, it is the right decision. Not convinced about the ability of Lancs to make the right choice as successor.
Having said that, I don’t know how you judge the success of a county coach nowadays. On the face of it, he came into it at a good time with some outstanding second team players . However, the outstanding ones aren’t going to play for the County much anyway. Winning cups is a matter of finding enough good players who aren’t going to be playing Tests or pub cricket .

Read oblivious to the general mood amongst supporters (shocker) and claiming it's been a period of sustained success.

"Unexpected ... I think so ... Surprised ... expecially by timing ....quoted statement .... suppose 7 years quite a long time ... progressed in his opinion on the field especially in last 4 years with Dane .... successful club .... lot right .... this season changing of guard, evolution of the squad .... transitioning .... not spoken to Glen or Mark just his opinion .... maybe part of that transition club moving in different direction."
