Yeah, its a fair point that with how cricket in general is run, with a lack of respect to the one day cup and CC, that it can be tough to run the playing side of a county. It could be worse, we could be Yorkshire.

Read oblivious to the general mood amongst supporters (shocker) and claiming it's been a period of sustained success. In fairness we're in a much better position now than when Chapple took over. Some of the players we had back in 2016, if we're being brutally honest, probably weren't quite good enough to play for a top Championship side. Now all those players have gone. If you go through our squad list, practically of them fall into the 'could play for England, have played for England or are playing for England' category, which should be our point of reference on all recruitment decisions. And we're no longer a yo-yo club. We're an established top five team and you'd hope we'd repeat that next season if we get a couple of overseas signings. That said, it was hard to imagine Chapple taking the next step and leading us to trophies, so this is undoubtedly the right call. Hopefully someone else can build on the foundations he's laid, despite the debt. I can see them bringing Flintoff in, for the publicity if nothing else. Gidney loves a bit of that doesn't he.

...I don’t know how you judge the success of a county coach nowadays..... Perhaps on long term recruitment -positives - Jennings, Vilas, Wells, Salt marginal Wood (for CC) still unsure Blatherwick. Developing new players - Bell, Hurst, Balderson look good for the future. The big gap is slow bowling. On results - 3 times runner up in the CC and 3 one day finals.. If Lancs were heading for relegation I would understand it more. Apparently Chapple still has a year of his contract to run and Scott Read thinks it is more the board looking for a change than Chapple.

When Chapple was made Head Coach, I thought it was a mistake because he had not been a great captain - good at leading by example but lacking in tactical ability and man-management skills. However, Lancs did improve during his tenure as coach: some good signings were made and he showed much more willingness than his predecessors to give young players a chance. However, things have gone backwards this season. This might be because Chapple has taken things as far as he could or, more likely, it could be that he has come second in a power struggle and has been effectively forced out. If there has been trouble behind the scenes it will have filtered down to the players and would explain why Lancs have fallen well short of expectations in all competitions. Chapple's loyalty to the club is legendary so I suppose we won't ever find out.

Thanks for posting those Chris .
I remember on the old forum, I opened a couple of threads where we picked our best Lancs teams and also one where we picked the players from any county/country who had given us most pleasure. He was in both of my teams. The championship season, whenever we needed a wicket, there was no better sight than Chapple handing his faded old cap to the umpire.
I certainly don’t blame him for not changing the Lancs culture of being inward looking and defensive. I think probably only a giant of the game, someone like Wasim could have done that. When Wasim left in 98 , it was clear from a couple of statements he made that he would love to have stayed in some capacity but he was too much his own man for that to be allowed to happen.

I did wonder how Chapple working for Chilton, after years of being the other way round, would work out. Perhaps it didn't.
The one player we've really missed, and who could have made a difference to Chapple's coaching legacy, is Jordan Clark. He's taken 48 wickets for Surrey @21 and scored 427 runs @27. Imagine Clark coming on at first change rather than Blatherwick.
Two players we haven't missed are Hameed, 674 runs @28, and Davies, 437 runs @26. Seems Peter Moores hasn't been able to turn Hameed's form around. A real shame, I thought he was going to be one of greatest of all time when I first saw him play.

Hameed's form has certainly dipped this season but last year he made over 1200 runs and averaged 58 so maybe Notts will keep faith. You're dead right about Jordan Clark, who has really blossomed at Surrey, and Davies, who hasn't been missed at all.
Making Chapple subordinate to a jobsworth like Chilton may well be at the root of this season's decline.

what's Tom Smith doing these days? Still coaching at Leicester? Isn't he at Yorkshire of all places? I'm sure he was not too long ago. He is still at Leicester: uk.linkedin.com/in/tom-smith-0177a2b9I suspect Graham Onions will get the head coach job and Steve Croft as his assistant.

The few spectators there were all convinced it was Tom Smith with the Yorkshire seconds at Southport. Heard his name mentioned several times and he certainly has a double if it wasn’t him. Although I’m on LinkedIn, cannot get into that link.
