Hartley is in for his lower order batting more than his bowling. Parkinson would have been much more useful today with the ball but our top order batting is so flaky at the moment that the management don't feel they can risk another bowler who can't bat. Coming back strongly is no substitute for not getting into a pickle in the first place.

Team feels disjointed at the moment, that we aren't sure what our best team is. We know Jimmy will be gone soon and we have Mitchell coming in. No one knows whats going on with Parkinson, Jennings is injured, Vilas badly out of form, Jones, Wood and Lamb yet to get a look in, De Grandhomme doesn't seem to fit in. And the likes of Buttler, Salt and Livingstone never seem to play for us. Our approach seems scattered.

All credit to Jimmy A for bowling his heart out for Lancs. Good to see a England player still willing to put in the hard yards for his county team.
IMHO if Parkinson has been playing I think we would have been more likely to have won.. Play Hartley for his batting but not for his bowling...so far in three games he has taken 2 wickets while in his one game Parky took 6. Also need some variety in the attack...otherwise just one right armed bowler after another...
On the batting side Balderson needs to come in even if Jennings is fit for Thursday.

An old hobby horse of mine but how much earlier should we have declared?

Sorry didn’t get a win for Alanw. Why are we paying CDG? I don't understand what his role in the team is. He didn't bowl yesterday. There was a spell after tea yesterday when the match was drifting. The run chase was long gone. The pitch was not offering anything. Williams was bowling from the Radcliffe Road end with a defensive field and Hartley was on at the pavilion end not threatening the batsmen. You sit there thinking we have an international bowler in the team surely he could come on to offer some variation and maybe break the partnership. Having a fifth seamer is a luxury we cannot afford and seems pointless unless you think one of your frontline bowlers is going to breakdown in which case your selection is flawed. if he is in the team for his batting he has not delivered yet, I know you can say the same about several of our batsmen.
He might earn his crust in the T20s.

An old hobby horse of mine but how much earlier should we have declared? I didn't think it was a bad declaration, the batting conditions looked good in the afternoon/ evening. If Notts had got off to a descent start I think they could have had a good crack at the total. Maybe if we had declared 10 mins before lunch we would have got that last wicket in the extra couple of overs but it's always easy with hindsight.

I really enjoyed yesterday’s play. I like Trent Bridge, had my first trip to a Lancashire away game there in 1982 when I was still at school. Went to stay with my sister in a student flat close to the ground for a few days. Lancashire lost a fascinating low scoring B&H semi-final which they were on course to win until Richard Hadlee turned things round with some late big hitting.
Disappointing that we didn’t get over the finish line again yesterday. Lancashire certainly had the worse of the conditions. Overcast and humid when they were batting first thing and then sunny later in the day during the Notts innings. Very impressed by Hartley’s batting. Frustrating that we have had the best of three rain affected games and could possibly had a couple of wins if the weather hadn’t intervened.
Looking ahead to the Somerset game, we need to take 20 wickets in what is likely to be another rain shortened game. Assuming Jennings is still out and Mitchell is available I would pick the following eleven:
Wells, Balderson, Bohannon, Mitchell, Croft, Jones, Bell, Bailey, Mahmood, Parkinson, Anderson.
There are things I don’t like in this team, Balderson opening and a long tail but I think it would give us the best chance of winning. It also seems hard to leave Hartley out.
I think Chappell will stick with the eleven who came close in the Notts game with possibly Mahmood coming in.
