An old hobby horse of mine but how much earlier should we have declared? Always a wonder when we go so close but I wouldn't have declared any earlier, the very short boundary on one side could have been a problem to beat us with, although it wasn't in the end.

This is why Hartley is in, his usefulness with the bat. Crofty goes, but a decent knock from him too. I've been very impressed by Hartley's batting today. Came in difficult conditions and steadied the ship then up'd the run rate when required. IMHO has looked better than Croft who to be fair is not in the best of form. And you wont to play jones instead of him in the next game , Giv ye head a little wobble AL.

Would Crofty be captain in that team you picked, Alan? A lot of bowling in that lineup, if Balderson and Mitchell help in that regard.
Also, does anyone have an idea if we are we expected to lose Mahmood to England this summer or is he likely to be around all summer for Lancs?

Before this season I looked at Hartley as a useful tailender someone who could come in and hit a couple of boundaries in the last over of a T20. I think his batting has improved significantly this year and watching him bat yesterday I did think that in a year or two he could be batting at five or six but I don't think he's there yet.
Jones is on the books as a specialised batsmen. He has been around a long time but never been consistent enough to establish himself in the first team. I had written him off half way through last season but he came back and scored some useful runs for us later in the season. He has scored runs for the seconds this year and so I think he deserves the opportunity.

Bailey did the job in the one day cup in 2021.
I think Mahmood needs to demonstrate his form for Lancashire before he gets back into the England set-up. I didn't think he was back to his previous form in the Somerset game which is maybe why he was rested for the Notts game. It's early days he's been out for a year. I do hope he gets back into the England setup. I saw him make his test debut in Barbados last year and thought he was the pick of our bowlers there. The other pacemen were Woakes, Fisher and Stokes so not the strongest attack to be fair.

.............................. Wells, Balderson, Bohannon, Mitchell, Croft, Jones, Bell, Bailey, Mahmood, Parkinson, Anderson.
There are things I don’t like in this team, Balderson opening and a long tail but I think it would give us the best chance of winning. It also seems hard to leave Hartley out. I'd go with that team. Jimmy bowled a lot of overs yesterday so he may miss out in which case Williams to replace him...

Agree with Alanw ; Mahmood looked a long way short of what he was at Taunton but I think that was to be expected.
Think we missed a bowler like him at his best yesterday ; I’m thinking of when he forced that result in Roses match at OT on a typically dead pitch. Not that I’m saying he is a better bowler than Jimmy of course but horses for courses.
Great to see lots of posts at present ; only an impression but seems more than we’ve had even in season for a while.

Balderson and Bohannon were going along great at 195 for 1 when the weather took us off for almost five hours.
But for that we could have declared well before the end of day three and set them a nominal 400 and still have more than 67 overs we ended up with to bowl them out.
It’s part of the game though and we just have to accept it.

Someone who is on a central contract is Joffra Archer who is returning early from the IPL due injury and with Olly Stone also now injured the chances of Mahmood being picked have increased. Problem is there are only two County games before tha Ashes start for Mahmood to prove his fitness and form.

An old hobby horse of mine but how much earlier should we have declared? I think the declaration was well enough judged and Lancs almost won. However, both in this game and at Chelmsford, we limited our options by our poor 1st innings batting.

I think Saqib is on a bowling development contract with England so they will have a big say in what happens to him regarding games played, resting etc. After being out for the last 12 months and having previous injuries I would expect he will be handled with kid gloves.
