Phil Salt and Luke Wood picked for the England ODI squad to play Ireland so will miss the Notts and Kent games. Interesting Luke Wood selection as he doesn't seem to have set the place alight in the T20 series. Mind you, I suppose going for 10 or more an over in T20 isn't exactly unusual.

Morley took 5 for 74 in the 2nd XI game...Singh 75 and 5 wickets in this game also.

Even a pessimist like me was fairly confident we’d win this match, but thought we might have to score 100 runs or thereabouts to do so. As Wells hadn’t bowled any of the previous 67 overs of the Northants innings, presumably he was just picked as a fill-in until the new ball was due. Northants are clearly a poor side, but we have beaten them by an innings with 80 overs to spare, so can’t do much better than that. There’s been plenty of criticism on this thread about the Lancashire hierarchy, the squad selection for the match and the decision at the toss, but we’ve picked up 22 points and moved up to fourth. Dave re the criticism. The squad/team selection completely justified, the decision at the toss completely justified, the Lancashire hierarchy I feel are still in the dock.

At least we have cover at wicketkeeper...... Wood has only played one CC game this season I think. Sam Hain finally selected for England, Crawley to captain. Potential changes for Middlesex game: Morley and Wood (if available and not rested) in for Blatherwick. Lamb and Jones left at home. Croft still in squad.
Potential changes for Notts and Kent: Croft for Salt, Bell to keep and loan market to cover for Wood's call up and injuries to Aspinwall, Blatherwick and Boyden - or maybe Anderson will play? Or Lamb? Or Joe Chapple?

The club hierarchy are certainly in the dock after yet another season of underachievement and I never saw anything wrong with bowling first at 10.30 in the morning against a side who can't bat (3 batting points all season and none at home) but I don't see how the win justifies the ultra-conservative team selection. Surely, if Vilas, Salt and Hartley had been replaced by Lavelle (or Singh), Hurst and Morley, we'd still have won? I think there's a question about Blatherwick as well: he certainly has pace and can disconcert batters but he is wildly inconsistent and doesn't seem to have improved at all this season. Time for someone else to be given a go? It's not as though we're challenging for anything.
(apologies for previous empty post - something went wrong)

I totally agree with Exile's post above. We should be using the September games to give some of the youngsters experience. I think the management are hoping we get third place in the championship so they can say "Good season coming third, only team to beat the champions, we've been unlucky with the weather, injuries, etc could easily have won a few more games and who knows where we would have ended up..."
Who is going to bat number 4 in the championship at the start of next season? Balderson is certainly an option but we would need somebody to do some of his bowling, Croft possibly, if he's still on the playing staff, will be planning his 40th Birthday celebrations next season, an overseas?

I agree with playing younger players rather than players who are leaving or retiring but I think it would be a mistake to leave out Salt given both his commitment to red ball and his form in the competition, particularly in contrast to Livi and Buttler who both seem to have given up on the championship. Would also comment that Salt is developing into a very good keeper.

Exile's comments about Blatherwick are (IMO) correct. This is his third full season with Lancs. In 2021 I saw a raw , inconsistent bowler with pace and possible potential. It's now 2023 and I see exactly the same bowler, nothing has changed, you literally don't know what he is going to deliver from one ball to the next. Lancs have got two fine ex bowlers on the coaching staff with Chapple and Onions so why is this the case, after all Blatherwick is now 25 years of age, he isn't a youngster. It's interesting that Kevin Shine was the bowling coach at Notts when they allowed Blatherwick to leave, the same coach that Tongue and Pennington cited as a major reason why they chose Notts over other counties, including Lancs in Tongue's case.

I'm all for playing the youngsters but we should respect the competition and play our strongest side not just give up because we can't catch Essex - 6 wins in a row or Surrey, In any event I believe there is prize money even for 5th so worth trying to catch Hants..

Chapple's post match comments regarding Wells yet again leave you scratching your head. It was pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain that Wells and Hartley bowled from the start yesterday morning in order to get through the remaining 13 overs asap before the new ball. Of course Wells suddenly turned into Shane Warne and took career best figures but the fact is the only reason he bowled was the impending new ball. Now, if Lancashire rate Wells as more than just a part time spinner as Chapple suggests, why wasn't he tried on Monday afternoon when the game was slightly drifting and even Bailey bowled a couple of overs of spin? Then you have to question the captaincy of Jennings for not giving him a go. He took 5 wickets yesterday, he's taken 4 more all season, that makes me think that Lancashire regard him as a part time spinner...more head scratching!
