Good win but Northants are a poor side destined for the second division with one win and seven defeats from eleven games. They could have lost to us at Old Trafford as well if a significant amount of time hadn't been lost to the weather. I reckon the win will put us fourth in the table after this round of matches unless Somerset do something miraculous at the Ageas Bowl. We have a realistic chance of ending up third in the table. I would like to see a couple of youngsters given a chance in the remaining three games. Our batting line up for the first Championship game of next year could be very similar to the one for this match without Vilas and Salt who is probably going to be in the IPL.

Easy win (as it should have been) against a weak side on a pitch offering a bit to the spinners. Perhaps now that we are "safe" the younger players might get a chance? Don't bet on it...

We have several young players in the team and probably room for another if Blatherwick unfit on Sunday. Worrying that Hartley bowls 34 overs for 1 wicket and Wells bowls 7.2 for 5

13 overs before the new ball which once again highlights the injured bowler. Start with Hartley and Balderson? The 2 Northants batsmen are now both set so do they play it carefully for those 13 overs or do they see it as an opportunity to make further inroads into the deficit? Does Hartley actually start to do the thing he was picked for?....They will probably start with Bailey and Williams! Yes, interesting tactical decision whether to go with Bailey and Williams from the start or wait for the new ball but risk allowing them to play themselves in. Whatever, I hope we finish this off by lunch. It could get increasingly difficult to prise them out as a depleted attack gets tired in the hot weather, especially without a genuine fast bowler or leg-spinner. Our last four wickets scored over 300 runs. The club's response would surely be that they have a leg spinner capable of taking 5fors

Great c&b by Wells. 3 for him this morning. Catches like that stick more often than people realise. Even more impressive of a medium pacer:

Worrying that Hartley bowls 34 overs for 1 wicket and Wells bowls 7.2 for 5 All part of the cunning Chapple plan, to hold back Wells until the 4th day so that Northants had not had previous sight of his bowling. Bit like Warne holding back in the county warm up games prior to the ball of the century.

Hartley is a good white ball spinner but at the moment is not enough of a threat with the red ball. Morley clearly a superior bowler but Hartley seems to get selected as he can bat.
TBH Wicket taking has been a problem all season, given the fact that Parky is sadly on the move, Morley should be playing every game from now on.
Good to see how Wells's bowling has improved as well.

Worrying that Hartley bowls 34 overs for 1 wicket and Wells bowls 7.2 for 5 Pretty much as expected sadly. Hartley is tall but does't do much with the ball. Luke has always been a useful option but seems to be more consistent these days, probably as he bowls alot more! Him and Morley would form a useful spin attack.

ESPN
Lancashire 524 (Bohannon 175, Balderson 115, Bailey 77, White 4-99) beat Northamptonshire 232 and 266 (Wells 5-25) by an innings and 26 runs
Lancashire's Luke Wells ripped through Northamptonshire's lower order taking career best figures of five for 25 with his part-time leg-spin to consign the hosts to their fifth innings defeat of the summer and their fourth at home.
Northamptonshire resumed on the fourth morning of this LV= Insurance County Championship match at Wantage Road on 211 for five, still needing another 81 to make Lancashire bat again. Hartley though had other ideas as the Steelbacks were bowled out for 266 to lose by an innings and 26 runs.
Lewis McManus (24) and Saif Zaib (45) extended their overnight partnership to 56 against the spin of Wells and Tom Hartley as the visitors waited to take the new ball.
McManus chipped Hartley over midwicket for four, but his long vigil finally ended after 82 balls when he turned Wells to George Bell at short leg who took an excellent catch.
Northamptonshire started to implode with Wells picking up a second wicket when Zaib chased a wide one, Phil Salt taking the catch behind the stumps. Wells soon had a third thanks to a stunning left-handed catch off his own bowling to remove Tom Taylor (4). Jack White (6) then slashed him to Keaton Jennings at slip.
Ben Sanderson was determined to go down fighting, smashing two fours and thumping Hartley over the Family Stand at long-on for six before he became Wells' fifth wicket, caught at mid-off with Northamptonshire leaving the field after just 50 minutes' play.

Career best performances For Tom Bailey with the bat and Luke Wells with the ball.

Even a pessimist like me was fairly confident we’d win this match, but thought we might have to score 100 runs or thereabouts to do so. As Wells hadn’t bowled any of the previous 67 overs of the Northants innings, presumably he was just picked as a fill-in until the new ball was due.
Northants are clearly a poor side, but we have beaten them by an innings with 80 overs to spare, so can’t do much better than that.
There’s been plenty of criticism on this thread about the Lancashire hierarchy, the squad selection for the match and the decision at the toss, but we’ve picked up 22 points and moved up to fourth.

If the weather co-operates the rest of Sept Lancs should have a good chance of winning the last 3 against Middlesex, Notts and lowly Kent.

Phil Salt and Luke Wood picked for the England ODI squad to play Ireland so will miss the Notts and Kent games.

At least we have cover at wicketkeeper......
Wood has only played one CC game this season I think.
Sam Hain finally selected for England, Crawley to captain.
