No I'd play Lyon....can't see any point in paying him a large salary just to kick his heels in the dressing room. Cricket Australia are only allowing him to play seven of the first nine championship games now, so he has to miss two games. If the weather is going to prevent a result in the Surrey game that might as well be one of the games he misses.

Hope everyone has wintered well. Whether playing or watching county cricket, league cricket or park cricket, lets hope we get plenty of sunshine and we can enjoy a great summer.

Assuming Lancs play a side which has Balderson in the top 7 with a keeper and 5 batsmen, that would leave 8-11 as the bowlers Balderson being the 5th, Wells the 6th.
Normally I would expect 8-11 being 3 pace bowlers and 1 spinner. That would mean 42 games out of our pace bowlers.
They need 12 games from each Williams and Bailey. 2 from Anderson. So 16 from Aspinwall, Mahmood and Blatherwick without expecting a lot from Stanley, Wood or Boyden. Should be possible. Less one for each time they play 2 spinners i.e. play Hartley & Lyon together.

First two rounds of the county championship completed in the first half of April. Eighteen matches across the two divisions seventeen draws thanks to the weather and Kookaburra ball. I've followed the county championship for 45 years and will continue to do so but who will be watching this in 45 years time?

I've followed the county championship for 45 years and will continue to do so but who will be watching this in 45 years time? You have to wonder, don't you, when nightwatchman Matthew Potts can score a large unbeaten century? The counter argument is that our bowlers are not good enough and that spinners get more of look in. eg Parky bowled a lot of overs for Kent but, if they're going to use the kookaburra ball then pitches will have to offer a bit of turn, or you're going to get more matches like at Northampton where 1,100 runs were scored for 8 wickets. Nobody wants to watch that.

Outfields are slow this time of year so if these Kookaburra games had take place later then the batting scores would probably been even greater!. Interesting that the Surrey/Somerset game has a good 1st day crowd but at the weekend the spectator numbers decreased... seen that happen at OT.

An excellent first day crowd but probably halved on the Saturday. The weather was warm on the first day and it was also the last day of school holidays (there were quite a few youngsters in the ground) so a cheap day out for the parents. On Saturday there was probably a lot of alternatives for both young and old.
