Notice they are both batsmen! Any bowlers like it?

It’s been a disappointing start to the season and several players in the team have underperformed. We have had one washed out game, a descent performance against Hampshire and capitulation against Essex. I think it is too early to make changes and I would stick with the current batting order for now.
In a pre season interview George Balserson said that he had been working on his white ball skills during the winter, I really hope that this has not been at the expense of his red ball game last season I thought he looked a really good orthodox batsmen. With the squad we have the current availability the alternative options are quite limited. Before the season when Benkenstein was interviewed he said that picking the team was just a case of selecting the players available and that it is not far from the truth with players in the IPL as well as Anderson, Mahmood and Stanley being unavailable.
George Lavelle has scored runs in the second XI and could be a like for like replacement for Hurst, but if he came into the side as a batsmen I would see him batting a 6 or 7. I think Aspinwall deserves a chance in the red ball team and could be a replacement for Blatherwick but he retired injured while batting in the recent second XI game and did not subsequently bowl so he could also be unavailable now which I think would leave Boyden as our only available backup seamer. Harry Singh could replace one of the batsmen but ideally you would probably want him to bat 6 or 7 on debut. It is still early days and hopefully we can turn things in the game against Kent next week.

Alanw . Good summary. Not just from the Lancashire view, but it has been a damned awful start to the season with the cold. The enemies of proper cricket must be delighted. Suspect the forces of evil are getting ready to have 10 first class teams aligned to the women’s teams and the 100.

The capitulation rather than just the defeat against Essex was worrying, but we need to see how we get on in the 'easier' games we've got coming up. Lavelle probably deserves a go in place of Hurst, and I'd rather have just 5 overs an innings from Mahmood than any from Blatherwick.

I think Hurst's keeping has been okay so I would give him another couple of games but I do think he needs to score runs to keep his place in the side.

After 2 games (they also had a washout), Hampshire have secured 4 batting and only 2 bowling bonus points. Not doing too well against Surrey at the moment either.

Worcestershire spin bowler Josh Baker has died at the age of 20.
Baker made two County Championship appearances this season, the last against Durham at Kidderminster in April.
The left-armer made his first-class debut in 2021 and played 47 games in all formats, taking 70 wickets.
"The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated," said Worcestershire chief executive Ashley Giles.
The club has not said how Baker died.
He played in a county second XI fixture this week against Somerset at Bromsgrove School, taking three wickets on Wednesday after wet conditions meant no play was possible on the first two days.
Worcestershire's first XI do not have a County Championship fixture this week.
"Josh was much more than a team-mate; he was an integral part of our cricket family," added former England spinner and coach Giles.
"We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends."
Born in Redditch, Baker came through the ranks at New Road and represented England at under-19 level.
He signed a three-year contract last year, having recovered from a back injury that he suffered in 2022, and played five Championship games to help Worcestershire win promotion from Championship Division Two.
A club statement said:, external "More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met.
"His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team."
Tributes to Baker have been paid by other first-class counties.
And Pakistan spin bowler Usama Mir, who is due to rejoin Worcestershire for this summer's T20 Blast, posted on X, formerly Twitter: "So sad and upset to hear the news of Josh’s passing. He was one of the nicest people you could meet. And a brilliant cricketer."
Professional Cricketers' Association chief executive Paul Lynch said:, external "Everybody at the PCA is heartbroken to hear of Josh’s passing and we offer our sincere condolences to all his family, friends and teammates.
“Josh was a cricketer with his full career and life ahead of him and this news is impossible to comprehend.
“The PCA and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust are working to support Josh’s family, his team-mates and all PCA members who are affected."
Worcestershire say they are "committed to honouring his memory in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was" but plans to pay tribute to him will remain private for the time being.

Looking at the quality of overseas players who played in this year's PSL it is mostly second tier superstars so I would imagine there will still be a fair amount of overseas players featuring in next year's competition. There are quite a few English players who take the rupee so the early rounds of the CC could suffer.
