Depends if the pitch breaks up or not. He will get bounce but the Indians are pretty good at playing spin!
TBH I think he will be out of his depth. Happy to be proved wrong.

Wish the lad well but think he'll do better with the bat than the ball.
50 on debut?

I would share the doubt above but Derek Pringle in The Cricket Paper thought it was not necessary to be a big spinner of the ball or to be a master of flight in India. He said that what is needed is to fire it in on line and length and let the big turning pitches just make it spin enough to get wickets. He cited Panesar as an example. As MITS said, we will see. I thought this on the last tour, you don't need to be a big turner of the ball because the pitches are bunsens, you need accuracy. I read somewhere that the selectorial punts if you like on Hartley and the young lad from Somerset are in part based on their height and high release points which mean they generate bounce as well as turn. You can see that Hartley might be considered the nearest we have to Axar Patel, we'll find out how near when he has a bowl! When Hartley is at his white ball best he is very accurate. I thought his white bowl length suffered last season because he played more red ball cricket but he recovered it as the season wore on. I do wish him good luck and hope his batting cameo gives him some confidence going into bat.

Wish the lad well but think he'll do better with the bat than the ball. 50 on debut? 23 from 24 balls with two 4s and a sixv3.5-0-39-0 I win!

A lot of pressure on two greenhorn spinners. I do believe that was Leach's first game back after the stress fracture that kept him out for most of the sumnmer.
Hartley did come close to a wicket on a couple of occasions and I shared his lip-read views on his second unsuccessful review, "How the **** did that go over?".

Simple question for the England management:
Did Lancashire employ Nathan Lyon as their overseas in 2024 because a) they expected Tom Hartley to be playing for England in all formats in 2024; or because b) they did not think Tom's red ball form was good to enough for their first team to win matches in the county championship?

TBH Morley has always looked a better red ball bowler. Turns it more and more variation in the flight.

From the Guardian. Looks like Hartley has been reading Derek Pringle.
“Hartley is interviewed, looking ahead to this series, in the latest issue of Wisden Cricket Monthly. “I’ve only been to India once but the pitches just allow you to fire it in, you don’t even have to think about flight or guile or anything like that,” he said. These are dangerous words and he will already be regretting them, particularly as his first day in Test cricket surely ended with him having caused more readers to squirm than balls to turn.”
Of course it is only his first nine overs of series . Re Rob’a mention of Kerrigan , Kerrigan was a leagues better bowler . For once I agreed with Peter Moores when he said at the end of 2011 that it was a pity SK wasn’t going on an Indian tour that winter when he was ready. He was actually picked when bowling nothing like he had that summer.
In retrospect I’ve just thought of a question I wished I’d asked John Abrahams last week. I raised my eyebrows when he said what a good captain Cook was ( admittedly at under 20 or whatever it was). I wished I’d asked did he not think AC’s handling of SK was appalling. I’m sure TH will be much better managed by Ben Stokes.

Be nice for Tom to get a five-for after all the criticism he's been getting, I mean it's not as though he selected himself ....
Going for 35.4-1-173-5
